I will make London a beacon of Islam

I am so glad I wasn't the only one that read it as bacon lol.

I have no problem if he decided to become a muslim, but supporting shady organisations I have a big issue with. I suspect he's merely playing the field though. (or playing them, so to speak).

As mentioned, he should be supporting every culture, not just one religion. (But perhaps he's been taken out of context considering he was speaking at a muslim event).

Ken's vision of a modernised London Underground.

in general a politician supporting a religious minority who face discrimination such a Muslims do in the UK is very positive step. But flirting with the people at one extreme of that religion who embrace the very worst stereotypes of Muslims is not constructive at all.

I fully believe that atheists face far more discrimination than Muslims do in everyday life. Muslims facing discrimination really isn't any worse than what most followers of that faith think about non Muslims.

I think people are over-focusing on the use of the word beacon here. Surely that just means 'something to follow' or 'example setting'? Or am I missing something? I was laughing at how ridiculous it was of Ken to say it, but I didn't think it was a particulary inflammatory thing to say.

Am I missing something?

The term is used similarly as in 'a beacon of light', meaning that the message of the writer is that he hopes to turn London into a place 'oozing / radiating' with Islam.

Its a moronic sense of Islamic Dawah that one day the entire world will be united under Islam, however long it takes and by any means neccessary.

I never read it that way if taken in the context of what he said:

Mr Livingstone, Labour’s candidate for mayor of London, pledged to “educate the mass of Londoners” in Islam, saying: “That will help to cement our city as a beacon that demonstrates the meaning of the words of the Prophet.” Mr Livingstone described Mohammed’s words in his last sermon as “an agenda for all humanity.”

Seemed to me to be about general moral values than any sort of oncoming islamic ooze, but I can appreciate how it can be seen that way.

That's a great phrase though - 'oncoming islamic ooze'.

The words if the prophet Muhammad weren't really of any decent moral standards by what we expect today, and absolutely nothing worth wanting to become a 'beacon of' to spread unless you are a fundamentamentalist Muslim practicing dawah, or just an over tollerant sheep from being brainwashed within the labor generation and acting overprotective of a faith that condemns you to death followed by eternal suffering.

This isn't a negative thing! In this country we have a massive problem with Muslims not integrating, and as such with terrorism. Perhaps if the non-Islamic population understood the (frankly dreadful) religion a bit better then Muslim immigrants will be able to integrate better reducing racism.

This is just a nightmare right?, someone wake me up :(

What's your problem with what I said? I honestly think that Ken is trying to integrate Muslims better into this country because, we all know, there are large areas where Muslim communities exist as what is, in essence, another country. Do you see what I mean?? He's trying to prevent ghettos forming.

thats highly unlikely. 9 times out of 10 the reason for not integrating is choice. 1st generation imigrants choose not to learn English, they choose to impart their own niche views and expect the rest of the country to accept this.

First and foremost this is a Christian country regardless of what all the atheists might say. Secondly if you went over to Qatar, Pakistan, Saudi etc and tried to impart your western ways you'd lose your hand faster than you can say binge drinking.

Mixing religion and politics in a shameless self-serving agenda.

I hope people aren't stupid enough to re-elect this cretin.
