Is insurance really that ridiculous for new drivers?

That is a heck of a lot of money to insure a 316i. I paid less at 25 for my 530i despite having less NCB and a fault claim on record!

oops made a mistake, £550. which tbh I dont think is too bad considering the protected ncb costs £50 and my excess is £0. I think I have around 6ncb which got me a reduction of a whole £5 for last year  I'm hoping 25 will see my insurance drop. I also have a mark against me because some old guy drove into the side of me a few years back and I'm now at greater RISK even tho it wasnt my fault -.-

This is what I just got quoted out on compare the market against what I pay with direct line £550

Comparison sites never favour me :(

I've just done a quote with the car in my name, my wife as the main driver, 15+ years of NCB, me with a TS10 which I picked up last year, wife had an accident in 2010 which went 50/50, then my daughter and son added as extra drivers. Car is a Civic 1.4 sport and I'm in the E band for insurance banding.

Cheapest I've got so far from Confused is £6782.97 :(

If I remove my son then the quote drops to £2363.14

Interestingly enough, if I make my daughter the main driver but with my son still removed the quote drops down to £1567.84 which I don't quite understand unless it's to do with the fact that my daughter is viewed as less risk as I've got points and my wife was involved in a claim?

wait a minute, cheaper fuel, where?

Fuel prices in this country have risen almost 100% in 10 years :(

as for insurance, I pay more for a 1.8 diesel focus at 30 with full no claims and clean driving history than i did for a modified R5 Turbo at 18. christ I was paying under a grand for a cosworth at 19 :( i feel for young drivers these days, impossible to insure anything decent unless your a millionare it seems.

UK, afaik you only pay 1.40 ish per liter or so ?
Price is €1.85 per liter here or 1.54 pounds per liter... That's for Euro95, premium fuels are a fair bit more expensive.

Out trainee IT technician who just turned 18 has been a named driver on his mums policy since he passed @ 17. Costing him £7,000. I'm glad I was born 5 years earlier than him as it cost me £1,400 to insure an 1.4 L reg corsa in my own name when I passed which is steep but reasonable.

Insurance for 17 year old boys is usually double than it is for girls.

It's a laugh isn't it. Insurance companies charge what they want and are effectively a monopoly.

What? How did you work that out there are 100's of insurers, the reason your premium is high is because you are very likely to have an accident and when you do everyone will sue you....

It's based on statistics if your premium is high the insurance company is telling you there is a very good chance you will crash

I doubt the accuracy of that postcode rating thing, i moved from what was apparently an F rated area to a C rated area and saw virtually no difference in premium, i also get cheaper quotes in the F rated area to my C rated area for my classic car policy.

Just why on earth would you pay that? It would be cheaper to have a taxi drive you around all year for that money. That is almost certainly a 'go away' quote too. No one pays that much for insurance unless it's a 21 year old footballer with a Porsche.

in the states its different from the UK for insurance law. Each state can have different regulations for driving, which is why some companies that operate in the UK only cover a few states in the US because if you get a good customer base in a few states it can rival the amount of income they take in the UK.

Sounds like a load of crap to me.

Insurance here for a 17 year old starts at 2k basically. And we still have to deal with the 45mph restriction for a year after test, stupid and dangerous rule.
