BITDEFENDER LIMITED OFFER

Wikipedida has a decent entry on mse. The gist is this.

MS wanted has wanted to include full av in windows for years, it started with windows defender. Then came mse, which is based on their corporate av but after multiple threats of lawsuits they had to tone it back plus make it an optional download. The signature db is as good as any other av and the more people using it the better it becomes.

MS focused on removal/repair (and in repairing windows they're probably unrivaled, unsurprising considering they built it) along with signature detection at the expense of heuristics. Kept the big boys happy and allowed them to get the back end solid.

Considering how many false positives heuristics still produce, it make sense. So yes, traditional sig based av should give up :P Mse is built into windows 8, meaing it can only improve. If nothing else it's a good removal/repair tool.

I know this aint the proper place for this post but whats MSE like, its is a system hogger or does it silently site in back ground with a bat waiting for the nastys to try it on?

didnt knew MSE as good as Bitdefender....so everyone should close their business?

I'm sure AV companies will continue to use scare tactics to make people cough up.

It's lightweight and non-intrusive.

The crucial part is that even if you do get a virus on your machine with paid for or free AV, your better of reformatting the computer, so making paying for an AV solution redundant.

Which is where Ms excels. Program designed to fix windows from MS engineers.

Still worth keeping a system image handy.

They're all as useless as one another. Anti-virus these days is about merely "ticking the box" for family members or friends that insist on having a AV.

Apart from the time BD decided to quarantine my entire windows directory and itself, it's been very good at stopping flash and java drive by attacks. :D

Flashblock is free. Chrome will patch flash automatically. Disable Java plug-in (chrome://plugins) until you need it.

That might work for me, but it wouldn't work for my wife. (And having to do it on a per tab basis would annoy me). I've been using BD for 4 years now, it's been pretty unobtrusive, and has given me peace of mind.

Why do you and your wife need Java?

Chrome is perfect for her as Flash is patched as soon as Adobe releases an update. She would have to be very unlucky to get hit by a Flash exploit and for it to take over the system.
