employers requesting facebook logins...

It's perfectly legal for them to ask, and if you give them permission then it's perfectly legal for them to look. I'm not sure where the law would stand on them discriminating against you for refusing however.

Not that I'd want to work for a company who felt they had the right to spy on their employees.

This. It is no different to a company asking for your credit card details. You do that all the time when you buy something. You have a right not to give such details, but you then probably wont be able to by the product or perhaps in this case get the job.

I would certainly never work for such a company that did this, except perhaps in national security etc.

A good point about discrimination, but I would have the feeling if they see evidence for some negative behaviour then that would be sound grounds not to hire you. E.g., if they see that every facebook post is about how much you hate work, can't be bothered wit work, can't wait until the weekend because you hate work, then fair enough if the company doesn't hire you. I don't see how you could claim unfair discrimination.

A simple "No" would suffice.

Surely this isn't a big problem. Unless people really are that stupid/desperate.

They can check that you are not posting company secrets on your wall (or discredit their image etc.)

That's a load of carp, surely? What next, monitor all my phonecalls? Bug my house in case I am talking about company secrets?

Simple answer. I don't have a Facebook page because I am not stupid and I don't want to be data-mined. Now give me the job.

They could just sniff network packets and install keyloggers in the workplace if they have computers if they really want to know that bad lol. of course thats assuming you use facebook/email at work.

Outside of 6am - 6pm what I do with my time is my choice surely? if I decide to bitch about work on facebook they can't stop me?

Thats why I don't ever add any work collegues on facebook

They can't stop you but they are perfectly entitled to fire you if you bitch about your work. The matter of working hours is meaningless in most employment cases. E.g.g, an anti drug policy is effective 24-7, not M-F 8-5. Any secrecy or NDA is valid at all times.

In my mind, this is private life.

Unless it breaks the law or hinders/affects the company i'm working, work are not allowed to know anything about my private life in my opinion :)

It is a worrying trend. I think if I really wanted the job I'd walk them around the account as a 'reference'. I've got nothing to hide on there but there's no way I'd give free access to the account.

I found it more worrying that my misses got asked for full access to her medical records with a job offer a few months back. She's an accountant FFS and it was one of the conditions of the offer.
She didn't want / need the job so we didn't get to the point of telling them no, but simply the fact that they had the audacity to ask was scary!

if it's in the contract, then the employer can do it. it is worth remembering that Facebook, Twitter et al are essentially public, not private, in how your information is managed and displayed.

simple solution is to not rant about your employer or make an example of yourself on social media, any more than you would on a billboard...
