I placed a bid on an item in a no reserve, no buy it now format, just a simple auction not long after it was listed (I believe it was a 5 day listing). There have been no other bids.

Its due to end soon-ish and I have just received an email from the seller saying that it was listed at an incorrect price and can't be withdrawn because it has a bid on it (mine).

Basically the seller says he isn't willing to let the item go for the price it is currently at as she/he paid more for it so is looking to end the auction early.

They also state they are willing to discuss a different price by phone and says sorry.

It just screams to me that its not got a high enough price as they expected so they want to get out of the sale. The bit about it being a mistake doesn't sound right because surely it'd have been done as a buy it now or they'd have contacted me sooner?

I'm guessing there isn't anything I can do because I haven't actually won it yet, its just annoying.

It is dodgy. He will try to get you to buy outside of ebay and then you won't have any protection.

Tell him to contact ebay, not you.

That was my first thought. I think I'll email him back saying that if he wants to remove it and relist I'll consider it price dependent through eBay, but otherwise to contact eBay to remove it.

Thanks.

he's trying to wriggle out of it, i've listed things without a reserve and a low starting price myself because its cheaper and some have gone for far less than i wanted but thats a risk i took.
I'm far more carfull now and this may teach the seller to be also

If he's clever he will just get a friend to bid on it to a reasonable price.

Anyway doesnt sound like you are getting the item, I would just let the auction run its course, and then if he refuses to sell it leave him a negative and move on.

Yeah it seems unlikely I'll get it either way. Ah well, it was a bit of an impulse bid. Nice if I won but don't really care if I don't.

There's just over 24 hours left. I think I will leave it till it ticks over to sub 24 hours and email back something like this

Hi,

I am not really keen on discussing a sale for it outside of eBay to be honest.

It's unfortunate that you listed the item for the incorrect price, or rather, a price you aren't willing to accept, but mistakes happen. It has however, been listed for several days with my bid. I'm afraid the fact that you paid 3x more for it doesn't really influence the price I would pay!

If you want to end the auction early, if possible, and relist 'correctly', that's up to you but if it is going to be for 3x more than it is now, then I will not be interested. Alternatively, you can wait till the auction runs to an end as things stand and see what happens - but I am only prepared to pay up to what I put as my maximum bid.

Cheers

Also, if he doesn't withdraw it and then doesn't go through with it, and I leave him bad feedback, can he not just leave me (fake) bad feedback?

Nope, sellers HAVE to leave positive feedback or none at all.

yes its much better now.

I bid on a fishing rod once which came with parts missing and after contacting the seller with no joy i left bad feedback, then within hours i had some bad feedback of my own.

Then i was contacted by the seller who said he would remove my feedback when his was gone, ebay did nothing so i had no choice..

I would just let the auction run and see what happens. It might jump up in price last minute with people trying to snipe. If it doesn't that's not really your problem.
As others have said if he wanted to see it for more he should have put a reserve on it.

Listing fees are cheaper if you set a low starting price and no reserve, so a lot of people list stuff like that and if it doesn't reach what they want they make up some story to try and get people to withdraw. Had something similar happen to me. Seller tried to claim the item had gone missing, but was listing 4 more of the same item at the same time. Finally admitted it hadn't gone high enough and there was no way he was going to sell at that price. Reported him to Ebay but they weren't interested.
