Right, I know this is an old machine but it serves me well till now.

For quite some time now the battery hasn't worked properly, forcing me to only be able to work the macbook when it's plugged in via cable.

The battery has an 'X' through it on the display, i've just received a replacement battery from the bay (i'm not paying £100 to apple for one) fitted it and it still doesn't work without the cable?!

Any ideas?

I've heard some 3rd party battery nightmare stories, but the one I put in my 2007 MBP has been fine. Might be worth taking it in to an Apple store, explain what happened and ask to try a new apple battery.

Well, I took it apart thanks to youtube, and just put it back together out of frustration.

Seems to have worked! No more X, but the new battery seems to have drained extremely quick, it was 49% 20 minutes ago its now 37%!?

And after searching the forums a lot, many have suffered the same problem even after forking out to apple for fixes, so good job!

ARGH!

Note that typically, people only speak up when they have a complaint; they're going to keep quiet if it works, because that's what it should do anyway.

I'd send it back to Apple or to an Authorised Reseller (recommended). They will be able to repair it, and if they haven't, they will try again for you. It's almost a guaranteed way to get a working system again.

As for the battery issues...I'm afraid I don't know, faulty cable? Unlikely I'd presume, but just thought I'd state what is probably your best choice.

It's out of Warrenty years ago now, so I don't feel like forking out for Apple's repair prices.

a lot of people are being told they need a new logistics board or something costing over £250 ...

That doesn't necessarily mean that you do, however it is possible. They mean logic board, in other words, motherboard.

I'd take it in and let them at least have a look at them, but I don't have a clue if Apple charge a service fee.

Honestly though, if it costs that much to repair it, it's probably worth looking for a replacement model on an auction site!

Logic board (i.e. system board, mainboard or motherboard in PC speak)

Well, I doubt i'd get much for mine on eBay because of the faults so a replacement is a bit costly for myself at the moment.

I guess i'll have to stick with it being plugged in for now, essentially being a desktop computer!
