Graphics cards and pc monitors have been able to run things at higher resolutions for years but all i keep hearing is people saying ' i want to run it at 120mhz @1080p' . I think to myself, 120 mhz - wow great, but 1080p. Stop getting so excited over something not so great!!!

And the point is..

Yeah you do notice 1080p used a lot now in terms of PC gaming, not sure how many would run interlaced :p

look at the price of a 1080p monitor, now look at the price for higher res monitors - and that is your answer

for instance - 1080p: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-053-BQ&groupid=17&catid=1120&subcat=
higher res - http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-041-DE&groupid=17&catid=1120&subcat=

there is a significant difference which is driven because of the TV market where most panels now are 1080p so the prices of 1080p panels has decreased :)

well... I have a 1920x1200 monitor at 24".

- a higher res on the same size panel would give tiny text
- and would cost more
- and i'd need a better GPU to get the same quality

- so all the monitors and TVs run the res
- and films are distirbuted in 1080p

so... what's the problem?

Because that's many monitors native resolution in the 22-27" bracket... Or am I missing the point?

1080p is the perfect sweet spot for price/picture quality for the majority of gamers. IMO 120hz 1080p makes an FPS game feel 3-4 times smoother/more realistic than standard 60hz.

I tried playing in 60hz yesterday and after 120hz everything feels fake (for want of a better word) and as if the game is lagging.

Also high res monitors have an extreme price tag to follow the extreme resolution on them. Also the high res monitors use IPS screens which create ghosting effects on a lot of games, most notably fast paced FPS games. Of course some monitors are better than others but personally I can't stand ghosting effects in games.

Why 120 Hz?

1) Fluid motion in games, higher refresh rates make it possible to display more frames per second. Some say it's a must in fast paced online shooters.
2) Lower input lag.
3) 3D gaming/video playback.

Why 1920x1080?

Because it's the most common resolution nowadays and most people are not willing to spend extra on a monitor.

What may appeal to you, may not appeal to everyone.

Notice that I have an IPS 60 Hz monitor running at 2560x1440, doesn't mean it would be suitable for everyone.

Almost no ghosting on my screen, it's panel dependent.

Because their 120hz monitors are 1080p....i guess?

OK first of all due to bandwidth limitations you are restricted to 1920x1080 max (or very close too - even 1920x1200 is out of range) @ 120hz over dual DVI. Given that 120hz is

a) necessary for 3D
b) much better for fast paced competitive gaming

it makes sense that 1080p is the target resolution, as it is the highest resolution at which you can run 120hz on that interface (obviously VGA is much higher).

@Mr Krugga. What do you mean by panel independent? Just wondering as I haven't come across this term while researching IPS displays, Ive seen I-IPS and S-IPS and the likes but I don't know what you mean by that term.

EDIT: I have seen some Dell's with high input lag/g2g response times but other's are lower but carry a serious price tag. But I haven't seen one near as close as the 1/2ms times on LCD 120hz screens.

Thanks, just the answer i needed :) . Im off to buy a 680

Hi - quick question - and im being a bit lazy here - google is usually my friend, but OFSTED are coming and im knee deep in session plans and schemes of work - ghrrfvcbhgrfhffbhrfk!!!!

Do OCUK have 120 mhz monitors for sale that are between 23- 27 inch and do 1920 * 1080 (and how much are they)

If so, will the 6950 / 7850 be able to run modern games at 120 mhz

also, dont shout at me if im being dim - does the mhz of the monitor limit the FPS of the game - eg will a 60 mhz monitor limit you to 60 FPS even though your system has the power to run more FPS.

im a bit confused with this mhz as you can see - i know my monitor a digimate 23 inch only runs at a max of 75 mhz at most resolutions upto 1920 x 1080

cheers everyone

@ianhopwood. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-051-BQ

This is a great monitor according to various reviews and other users, have a read up about it. It's only released ~2 months and seem to be selling like hot cakes everywhere.

I got one and tbh I was more impressed than what I thought I would be considering the price! Good solid build quality with easy to set up menu's/settings. It can also be assembled/disassembled very easily.

Any other q's just ask, although you might want to start your own thread due to thread hijacking.

EDIT: An unlocked 6950 would run games at 120hz but nowhere near on highest settings, you would need 2 heavily OC'd and settings turned down a small bit to reach >110 fps in games like BF3.
