WP8 isn't really very close AFAIK, we're looking at around the autumn for the release I think?
I'm also pretty certain all the handsets currently out with WP7.5 (even those release phones for WP7) will be upgradeable to WP8, although some new features may not be available if the hardware isn't available in the phones.
There's probably 6 months or more before WP8 comes out and the 800/900 will certainly be upgradeable so I'd go with one of them.

Ah but its my understanding the main benefit WP8 is bringing is switching kernel, allowing for more modern/multi-core processor architectures. I am worried the current Nokia phones will be underpowered and feature-light under the new system (if they roll-over upgrade at all). Its as big a difference as going from a Pentium 4 to a Dual Core processor - those were the days 
In a world where 18 to 24 month contracts are common place, i can not understand how you deem six months as not close.
Can i ask, on what basis do you believe that, do you have a source, and is there a historical reasoning? I ask because its proving very very hard to get a definitive sourced answer, mostly its speculation.

I guess it depends on what you class as feature light. Obviously they aren't going to have NFC and higher resolution screens but it depends if you insist on having them. We're also talking closer to 6-9 months, basically you're saying don't ever buy a phone because the next one will be better...
The basis for my suggestion that WP7 phones will be upgraded is a post basically saying so (very recent), however I can't find it now. I'll keep looking. I'd also like to think MS wouldn't be that stupid. If they don't provide the latest version for even 6 month old phones then they will **** a huge number of people off, not something you want to do with a low market share anyway, especially when your competitors do...
If you're thinking of getting a cheap phone why not just look at a Nokia 710 or an LG Optimus 7 off contract for the next 6+ months. WP7 and cheap. If they aren't upgraded to WP8 then at least you can then go on contract and get the latest WP8 phone.

This was the biggest thing that annoyed me about Android. If you go into a store today you have:
A. SGN
B. SGSII
that aren't outdated. Every single other Android phone there is outdated. So quite frankly if my Nokia Lumia 710 (despite it costing all of £150
) isn't supported for 2 years from release I'll just give in and get an iPhone. I would imagine Microsoft & Nokia are very aware of this.Windows live being rebranded

The Samsung s3 will apparently get a w8 release as well in October with the only difference other than OS, is the W8 model will feature an extra dedicated camera button

Lots of businesses have dumped Blackberry for iphones, and are also using ipads. I don't think Windows 8 will change that, and indeed MS could get locked out of those companies altogether if they go for MAC computers, as ITV did. In my opinion, Apple are a huge threat to MS in the business world, and I don't like that at all.
If this happens, I will be buying on release. Absolutely no doubts whatsoever. I love my Lumia 800, but I'd like something with a bit more "oomph" and a much bigger screen.
Nokia will release other stuff as well.
W8 allows multi core and 4 screen resolutions. So all w8 phone builders will be releasing top end phones.
Oh I know, but I really like the S3 design (unlike a lot of people seemingly).
I like my Lumia 800, but I would quite like to go to a thinner phone again, which I'd imagine won't be what Nokia aim for.

I don't think Nokia will struggle to best it in the looks department at least.
Such a step backwards, the back of that looks even more like an SGS1 then the SGS3 does.
I guess we'll see what comes out around the time.. But I definitely wouldn't be sad about the S3 being the "best specced" phone at the time.
Microsofts biggest advantagwe with this is their unification of OS's based on dev tools that are already in heavy use.
Developing for a business using windows PC's and iOS handhelds/tablets would be a lot more work than for a business that has Windows on all 3 form factors.
Your using the same language, same dev environment and same libraries with W8.
With the curved glass on the 800 and in that gloss white....mmmmmmmmmmm
