Disable UAC - Windows 7

I've had UAC disabled since Vista launched, it popping up, however infrequently after initial installs, just annoys me :p.

I leave it enabled when I set other peoples computers up (well, reenable it after I've installed everything).

UAC helps prevent people getting root access to your system, it does a decent job at it too. It should be left on. Antivirus/firewall ect won't stop somebody when they're in, but this will (To an extent).

What? You had to manually elevate to gain access...

Not at all, it didn't work. It was still broken in Jan when I removed UAC. No variation on my two desktops or laptop. Open File Location just plain refused to function on my user -> elevated admin setup.

I actually enjoyed entering my password to carry out most tasks, it gave me that false sense of security and of being in control :p

UAC is completely pointless.

The experienced user doesnt' want to see invasive pop ups every time they try to run something, and the inexperienced user will just click Yes every time, thus defeating the object.

They won't though. My girlfriends PC almost got infected with Win32.Ramnit which would have been a nightmare to remove, and the only thing that saved it was UAC. This is on a PC with updated Windows patches, updated Firefox with AdBlock+, updated Kapersky 2012 and a firewall. She had gone to a website about some local council event and it had what looked like a compromised link that led to the trojan. It got past the firewall and Kapersky and managed to copy itself to the AppData folder and add itself to the registry and the startup folders.

The only thing that saved the machine was when UAC intercepted it when it actually tried to execute itself against cmd.exe. As soon as UAC popped up she told me, i clicked no, booted into safe mode, removed it manually then ran MBAM, Kapersky, TDDS Killer, Stinger and a few other things to make sure.

I'm really annoyed it got past Kapersky but thank god i have UAC on her PC and only let her use a standard account to login.

UAC has come a long way since the terrible initial implementation through Vista. W7 is really quite good on this, and I'd strongly advise you leave it enabled. I would definitely class myself as an "experienced user", and I really don't mind UAC popups, nor am I incapable of clicking one button to make them vanish...

When ever these threads pop up get get two inevitable response groups.

A. People who have it on for many reasons.

B. People who have it off for a handful of reasons, but mainly nostalgia i.e. grew-up without needing it.

Group A has problems, but they're easy to fix. Group B has problems - though fewer as they're more technically astute, but tend to profess they've never had issues without it. It's like saying you don't use a seat belt and have never had an accident until the day it happens and turns out to be permanent.

MS have gone to great lengths these past 5 years to help people but it always comes back to someone reading some blog/determined to improve what they can then "tweaking" (i.e. turning stuff off) until they break it.

Incidentally MSE is indisputably one of the best av around and consistently outperforms most paid for AV without the privacy/wallet invasion that comes with them. Probably has something to do with MS engineers actually knowing what should and shouldn't be happening in windows :)

MSE is built into windows 8 for the record, it really is that good. Unfortunately some people will still remove it in favor of the more familiar, less effective, more intrusive, paid solutions. That's life though. Sophos, highly effective industrial AV (like Cisco uses them effective), hand out their mac av for free trying to help these people but some are just determined to make things worse for themselves.

If Darwin could see them now...

I don't use UAC, but see why people do.

I personally just use Malwarebytes and decent hardware firewall, and touch wood haven't had a virus in years, despite many morons having access to my pc over time for browsing/downloading etc.

Switch it off on several PCs on my network, as unfortunately it stops some legacy software from working :(

For the rest, and my home laptop, its on.

The people who resist UAC the most are the people it's there to protect. A little knowledge in the wrong hands is a powerful thing

Honestly, why does it matter what software protection people use?

Some people in this thread honestly come across like the biggest Microsoft fanboys there is and have a hissy fit when someone says they don't have it turned on  and then when perfectly good explanations are given back they throw their toys out the pram.

As for this stupid term "snake oil" products.......go and do some research on the stuff and not just by one bias sites/forums that supports only Microsoft products and you will see that some alternatives, which are free or paid for AV and FW etc. are highly regarded and come out as being the best programs there is especially comodo and eset.

I wonder why they have won so many awards for best security software etc. and not just on one site but LOADS.

And once again just to remind you, I and many of my other friends (some of which who don't have a clue in PC stuff) have had no problems with our PCs/laptops, spyware, viruses etc. in the last 2 years or however long it is since we have had the security stuff setup with UAC turned off (SHOCK HORROR ) (*touch wood*)

*waits for the microsoft defence team consisting of KIA and nathane to post*

Do you want to launch this program? YES

Are you sure you want to launch this program? YES

Are you really really sure you want to launch this program? YES

It might install something on your computer, so are you absolutely sure? YES

I ******* HATE UAC! it's my computer, if I want to install or open a program then ******* let me! antivirus exists for a reason.

First thing I do after first boot is turn of UAC, does my head in lol

IMO, the only people that should have it enabled are people who buy their PC's from highstreet shops, and people that aren't the admins on their PC's.

I'm surprised anybody on this forum has it switched on at all

What program are you actually running rather than installing hat needs uac elevation every time it is launched?

It's any program, if I open up firefox or iTunes, UAC pops up and goes "Are you sure you want to open this"

It's just easier to turn it off and not have any interuptions, I, like most of the people on here should know what I'm doing with a computer, therefore if I get a virus through using dodgy software, Security Essentials and Malware Bytes will get rid of it
