Climate control on Mondeos

Hi all, just wondering if I could get the general opinion on how effective the climate control (full auto climate) is on the Mondeo (Mk3). Strongly desire one of these as my next car, but as a requirement it must have full auto climate control and I've heard mixed opinions on Ford systems, compared to say Volvo, BMW etc.

As a secondary question, has anyone had the newest Fiesta (Mk7) Titanium with full auto climate, and do they have an opinion on that?

FORD AC seems to suck power worse than almost all other car makers. A 35mpg cruise in my FiestaST becomes a 26mpg cruise with AC switched on.

My climate control seems to function very well on my 8 year old Mk3 - no complaints :)

Couldn't tell you what impact it has on fuel consumption as I haven't turned it off yet.

Are you seriously telling me the airconditioning on a 2 litre Fiesta reduces fuel economy by 33%? I mean... really?

Sorry, but I simply do not buy it. My 2 litre Mondeo never did that and you are claiming that cruising in a 2 litre Ford with the AC on uses more fuel than doing the same thing in a V8 Mercedes S Class.

Just no.

i dunno, ive only driven the thing 60000miles maybe im mistaken.

Ford design is 100% on or 100% off for its AC, when it clicks on there is a very large dragging force.

Do you honestly think that on a Motorway cruise with the AC on your Fiesta uses more fuel than a Mercedes S500? :D

I dunno what RPM will the S500 be doing in 7th gear while my car is in 5th at 4000rpm?

to be fair ive probably over estimated the 35mpg and under estimated the 26. Probably more like 32 down to 28.

So we've gone from almost 10 to barely 4? :p

Sounding a bit more credible now, though I'd expect 2mpgish at the very most. Never made much difference on my Mondeo, which was a bit less powerful than your Fiesta as well.

aye been a long day.

the mpg is terrible above 65, adding the AC makes it feel like you've hit a brick wall. Yet in our Renault and the Golf ive driven you don't even know its on (other than being cold).

Ahh climate control... One of those things that I was quite happy without until I had it on my old Skoda Octavia. Now I doubt I'd want to buy a car without it.

The only car I've ever noticed a real hit from the aircon was my old W reg 68bph 1.4 MPI Skoda Fabia. Theres a 2 mile stretch of uphill dual carriageway near me. With aircon off the car would do 70 mph all the way in 5th. With aircon on the speed would gradually start to bleed and I'd need to drop to 4th to stay at 70. That car had the most gutless engine I've ever had the 'pleasure' of driving compared to its size.

Never had any bother with the EATC (as Ford call it) on my Mk3 ST TDCi. I just set it to 22 in Winter and 20 in Summer and hit the demist button if the windows are steamed up.

The only minor criticism of the Ford system is that on very hot days (20 degrees plus) it never really blasts out icy cold air unless you set it to LO. I prefer to overcool the car when it's really hot outside.

I find it terribly annoying when people fiddle with their climate control all the time. I have a friend who goes through a cycle of running with it turned off, windows steam up, turn temp and fan speed to full pelt, clear windows, turn off, repeat cycle every 10 minutes of the journey. I just can't get through to him if he left it on Auto and set the temp as required it will sort itself out!

It's superb and very effective. I, like the poster above, wasn't so fussed when I had a car without it but now I don't want a car without it!

I don't think I've adjusted mine this year, in fact! It just sits there and keeps the cabin at a comfortable 20c.

Thanks all. I'm not too fussed about the fuel consumption (if all goes to plan, when I come to the purchase of my next car I'll be doing <6k miles a year), just wondered how good the climate control was at maintaining temperatures etc.

On my 1.25 Fiesta now I only lose 2mpg with AC on all the time (40mpg round town down to about 37/38) which doesn't bother me, it's just the noticeable power drop and lurch when the compressor kicks in every 30 seconds or so! :D
