so i'm gonna be getting a gtx 680 probably some time next week and i currently run a triple 120hz monitor set up for 3D surround. Now i know these cards can power upto 4 screens but they only have 2 x dvi so am i right in thinking i need a displayport to dual link dvi adaptor? if thats the case, due to the price (about £80) think i'd simply rather just skip it for a little while and just get another gtx 680 for sli which would then provide the extra dvi outputs like i currently have now

well hdmi is out as it doesn't have the required bandwidth and the monitors only have dvi/hdmi connections so displayport is also out. are the cheapest dual link adaptors out there really £80? seems very expensive compared to the hundreds of single link ones i can find for £10 or so

Looks that way from a quick Google search.

Still, much cheaper than another GTX680. Having said that if you want to achieve consistent 120FPS over three monitors you'll need more than one GTX680 anyway!

yeah its obviously cheaper, it just seems like £80 wasted though when i would be going sli eventually anyway, this would just speed the process up. shame it'll break the triple monitor setup for a while though

ok to get good frame rates 2D with high settings, one good card.

to get good frame rates 3D vision, high settings, two good cards in SLI (source, my own personal experience because I bought a 3D vision monitor and SLI)

3D vision, across 3 screens, high settings, doesn't even bear thinking about what kind rig you would need.

totally depends on the game you're playing. if you're thinking metro 2033 or something like that then obviously its not gonna work but i can play something like iracing all maxed settings (except forced 2xssaa and 2 pass shadows off) in 3d surround no worries whatsoever on gtx 560 sli. i thought by all accounts the power of the gtx 680 was roughly equivalent to 560 sli

bee you madman! get the second 680, you know the extra grunt will be needed!

what monitors are you rocking on your surround setup? Id love to see it in action

Yeah, I bought it to play Arkham City, if you just want to spend all day on Counter Strike, then go for it dude. Also, check out the 3D vision support for the games you want to play. You'd be surprised which ones don't work. I think of two straight away, GTA 4 and Shift 2.

yeah i know the extra grunt is definitely needed but i wanted to run it with a single card for a short while but it seems i wont be able to do that as i feel the extra £80 expense for the adaptor simply isn't worth it

got 3 LG W2363D, couldn't resist at the time, got all 3 for £382 delivered and sold my old benq for about £170

dunno where you get counterstrike from? iracing because of its unrivalled triple screen support is honestly the best looking game i've played in 3D/surround and i've been using it for over 2 years. feels almost like a real simulator at times if i'm honest. trine 2 would come a close second i think and yes i'm well aware of the pitfalls and workarounds for 3D

3D Vision is good, but to run the latest games, at high settings, you need two cards, there is no escaping it. Arkham City on high PhysX is a joke on one 580 in 3D

P.S that racing game looks good, never heard of it before, might give it a try. thought it was a typo lol. apologies.
