Some advice for a complete novice on an i7 920 OC

No, just realised i didn't adjust the bclk (face palm!)..

Just tried.. a bit nervous to attempt 200 yet, tried 191 though (i think) to give 4.1Ghz & got a blue screen as soon as Windows loaded.. caught a bit of the error that said 'non executable memory' etc then tried again (a bit stupid I know) and it froze on the Windows loading icon..
I've gone back down to 3.15Ghz where it seems stable for the moment.. and it's over to you..

dont be scared to run 200x21,ive ran that for years

try those settings i gave you but with revised settings above ^^

youll be fine with that cooler,if you get to windows load cpu-z and realtemp and make a note of cpu voltage and core temps at load and post back

OK, I'll Try now..

I can't manually adjust the Qpi Link Speed (It's highlighted in light blue as opposed to white) the options are:
Auto - 7.2Ghz
Slow mode - 100Mhz
x36 - 7.2Ghz
x44 - 8.8Ghz
x48 - 9.66Ghz

if it blue screens ect try and catch the code it will be a lot of 000's starting or followed by 124 which is not enough qpi/vtt voltage and 101 means not enough cpu voltage

can try with qpi/vtt at 1.32000 or near abouts and dvid +0.0600v to +0.0750v keep testing and adjusting

no higher than 80c on coretemps
no higher than 1.38v cpu voltage for 4.2ghz imo
shouldnt need anymore than 1.35v qpi/vtt voltage either

Is 36x the lowest?if so use that and should be fine

I lifted that template for someone who wanted oc with 12gb of ram hence the 44x,I forgot to set it back

Yes it is (auto gives the same 7,2GHz)

tried qpi/vtt at 1.335v & just got a restart (without blue screen) ..couldn't find dvid setting though & then when i tried to enter the bios it froze & upon rebooting things had been set back to stock.
Could it be that I'm just unlucky and my CPU can't handle the additional load (the way that my luck's going at the moment it wouldn't surprise me!) if that's the case then c'est la vie I'll just have to live with it.

no its just finding the right amount of cpu and qpi/vtt voltage, each cpu will be different,i have two 920's one needs only 1.26v for 4.2ghz the other needs 1.35v for 4.2ghz

dvid will be unlocked when you set cpu voltage to normal in the list

try with +0.0750v in dvid and try 1.35v qpi/vtt

your still well within safe limits

Hey wazza I just wanted to say that I'm extremely grateful for your time & help.. bad news I'm afraid though.. black screen, so had to manually power off (+0.0750v dvid & 1.355v QPI/VTT) the 1.355v is highlighted in pink though, this is bad right..?

qpi/vtt is fine anything upto 1.4v some use more, still might need more cpu voltage you would need to test with dvid,no more than +0.0900v though,it takes time to get it right, not every cpu will be the same regarding voltages it needs, have another go at it 2morro ill try and help best i can

Fair enough.. and thanks, time to let off a little steam in Skyrim!

Hey wazza was just going through my bios settings again & discovered that I'd set the DVID to -0.0750v not + as you suggested, should I try upping the BCLK to 200 now..?

haha ohh god no wonder, - will take that amount of cpu voltage off your load voltage,+ will add,and i would try +0.0650v first

and yeah 200bclk!!!!!!!!! go for it

Chickened out & set the BCLK to 193 (I think) 4.01GHz.. any-ways definite progress, as I'm now in Windows & so far no problems (did take quite a bit longer to load windows though, is this a permanent symptom of the OC?).. what do I now need to do for stability testing, temps etc

might load first time a bit longer but shouldnt affect load times

try prime95 on blend test

and try intel burn test on high for a max of 10 runs, then if it passes could go for maximum and 10 runs

use realtemp and dont let cores go above 80c,stop the test if they do,odd spikes of 81-83c is fine but not at that temp for long

see how temps are at idle/load and if they are ok go for the 4.2ghz,you will do it imo with that cooler,i used a thermolab baram cooler and could run at 4.2ghz easily

OK..

I'm running Real Temp at the moment and it's ranging from 34 - 42c idle I'll fire up Intel burn test & Prime & report back.

Thought it was going a bit too smoothly, blue screen crash after about 10sec of Intel burn test on high (temps were around 60c).. & forgot to mention that I don't have a +0.0650v DVID setting either 0.06250 or 0.06875 i chose the latter..
