I know at least a couple of you here are EQ vets, as am I.

On the official forums there was a growing clamour for EQ to adopt some kind of Free to Play model, although many of us (myself included) didn't believe SOE would ever go for it.

Well they have! As of March, you can play New EverQuest (a la New Labour) without a sub.

At the same time, Old EverQuest (circa 1999-2002) is finally being laid to rest. The EQ Mac server is finally being "sunsetted" by SOE - under the reasoning that it is a single point of failure and could be exploited by terrorists*.

*or something.

Sadly it isn't really going free to play. It's the same abortion of a model EQ2 uses.

No monthly sub, but any class, race combinations you want need to be bought.

So many restrictions that if you only plan to return for a month or two subscribing is a much better option imo.

Quick question me and my mate just set up on EQ2. Will this still be running? Is the other EQ better? Is it worth investing in anytime in EQ2 then?

EQ2 won't be going anywhere anytime soon, it's running and profitable and that wont change apparently.

EQ1 is better in a nostalgia sense if you've played before, but if you're used to current MMO's the learning curve can be a bit debilitating, EQ2 is much easier to get in to imo.

EQ2 lost most of its greatness 2-3 expansions ago in a gameplay sense, thankfully the player base and some very solid guild communities make up for this.

If you enjoy 2 and have invested time money there already, stick it out to end game and enjoy the community.

From the looks of it im in the Splitpaw server and my friend is in the Oasis Server......apparently it costs $25 to change server. So i cant actually play this with friends?

Best advice is to reroll then, especially if one of you is fairly high, can mentor and power level the other up in a few hours.

For those who played before (it's been going since 1999 after all!), all of your characters created before the end of this month (Feb) will be playable under FTP.

You need to buy races & classes (that aren't included in the free ones) only for new characters created March onwards.

In simpler terms, you don't lose access to your old chars when it goes FTP.

EQ is an archaic game for those who haven't played it before, it's got a very different default keyset and playstyle to the common MMO's of today such as WoW, EQ2 & LotRO for example...

I play EQ/EQ2/WoW and it's hard to go from EQ to the other 2 properly without a few key screw ups :)

I tried the EQ2 f2p, it was far too limited to be enjoyable without spending money.

Is it the same deal with this, or can I actually play the game at a decent level without spending a penny?

Well for a start a lot of the classes are restricted. You can unlock individual classes with a one-time fee (races too).

I'm pretty sure you could get to a decent level, just not the very end-game.

Last I heard is that you cant get on the progression servers with ftp.

Only the normal servers where everyone is already level 5376.

No new progression servers and no ftp on them means EQ ftp is utterly utterly utterly pointless.
