Hi guys,

I just received my first ever gaming laptop today...Samsung Series 7 Gamer.

I've never gamed on pc's before and I have a few questions...

I've been hearing about the Steam downloading service...i want to know is it better to download the game off steam or just buy a regular disk version?
Mainly because I think it would take long to download some of the games i want, due to my average internet connection.

Secondly if i buy the retail disc version of the game...can i install it on my laptop? and will i need to insert the disc everytime i play, or can it run of the hard disc once installed?

thanks

games will run off the hard disk, but most of the time they still require the dvd in the drive because of drm (copy protection)

Steam is personal preference, advantages are:
dont need dvd in drive,
dont have to worry about losing or damaging the dvd,
dont have to go to the shop to get it,
can preload new releases and play at midnight on day of release
can re download games to any computer using your steam account.
built in chat/acheivements - kinda like pc version of xbox live.
sometimes has killer sales around the holidays where games can be had super cheap
some games require steam account even if you buy the dvd version anyway as there version of drm.

if your net connection is bad just leave it on to download over night or when you're out.

there are some competing download sites also like ea's origin, allot of people don't like origin but they have games only available on origin like mass effect 3, i personally dont have a problem with it, and some relatively recent titles apear cheaper on origin than steam.

Steam and GOG are my personal favourites.

You will be forced to buy some games on Origin if you want to play any new EA games.

Other online stores are fine as long as the games are Steamworks.

Ubisoft games will still suffer from a crappy DRM system, whether you buy them on Steam or elsewhere.

You need to remember that some retail games use steamworks for copy protection. Basically you buy a retail copy of the game and when you install the game, steam is installed automatically (if you don't already have it) and the game is then installed via steam. This means the serial number for the game is now *permanently* linked to your steam account and can't be sold or transferred.

Steam's worth it for the sales alone: 75% off the best games ever etc. But I find new releases cheaper to buy the disk online.

Steam is THE client to have if you have a gaming pc/laptop.

Why would anyone NOT want to install this great innovation to pc gaming from valve?! :D

Great thing about Steam seems to be that if you activate a retail purchase through Steam and lose the disc, you can download the game after. I only realised this by accident the other day when I went to reinstall Mount & Blade: Warband.

I would always recommend gaming on a desktop! or at least plug in a larger monitor into your laptop and use a MOUSE instead of the trackpad :)

Yep, definitely make sure you have a mouse!

Most games these days don't really need the disks. Most are steamworks or similar. I can't think of a game I've bought recently that needed a disk but then again I don't buy many games from shops.

I've used steam for a while and never had problems with connection. I used to have a 2mbps connection which was incredibly slow, too. I just left games to download overnight. Could eat your download limit if you have one though.

It's funny.

I was so excited about my new gaming laptop that i bought disc versions of crysis and cysis warhead (£10 in total, traded a few games into GAME and got them for free along with BF3 and Rage) before my laptop arrived...

installed them both, and it's weird that crysis requires the disc to play the game, and crysis warhead does not.

anyway, just wanted to know how crysis 2 compares to crysis and crysis warhead?
