David Cameron has advised motorists to top up their tanks while they still can.

Francis Maude has advised motorists to store petrol in a jerrycan (approx. 20L and banned decades ago) in their garage - the Fire Brigade have suggested that Francis Maude is a lunatic.

Cameron says that "there is no need to queue" - I wonder when Cameron last sat in a queue outside a petrol station

Anyhow, must rush, on the sage advice of our brilliant Tory government, I am just off to fill up every conceivable container with highly flammable liquid and store them next to the boiler ;)

I thought I must be reading The Onion when I read Cameron and Maude's comments. Ridiculous things to say.

When did petrol cans get banned?

I always thought you were meant to keep them empty and only fill them if you are going to use the petrol straight away EG if you have run out of petrol. I don't think you are meant to store petrol in them

I've filled the car, the bath, six petrol cans, the water butt, my neighbour’s water butt (he doesn't know it yet) and two bins. I am a good citizen.

Petrol for sale signs are painted and ready. :p

Isn't it just common sense. When I'm driving, and I notice that my tank is a bit below what I'm happy with then I'll pull into a station and top it up. I like to have about at least a quarter of a tank at a minimum. I don't think that he's telling us to go out panic buying.

As long as I can top up my tank this sunday to drive back home ill be happy :D

Im sure everything will be fine. Everyone just callmmmm doowwwwnnnn...sssshhhhhhhhh, its ok...

Here's what I don't get....

If the media says there will be a shortage, then everyone will go and fill up there tanks...

...causing a shortage.

Surely if they didn't say anything about it then there would be no panic buying, thus no shortage.

Good thing I filled up last week.

Sounds like a massive marketing campaign to me

I believe the legislation is that a metal can may not contain more than 10 litres and a plastic one may contain no more than 5 litres. I believe also that you are not allowed to store more than five gallons and that this legislation dates from between the wars! I think that the legislation even extends to the colour of the container.

I think the only thing that "Our dear leader" needs to do is better understand how stupid a lot of people are and how easy it would be for said idiots to mis-interpret what he said as "buy now because all the petrol is about to dry up".
