Is the GTX 480 still a valid card?

Thinking of saving some cash and picking up a GTX 480 rather than a 680. I only do moderate gaming.

Am i right in thinking the GTX 480 will max out most if not all games @ 1080p for the time being and the near future?

At 1080p the only games it won't max out are Metro 2033 and possibly Crysis/BF3.

But considering you only do moderate gaming, you'll probably be content with one or two settings turned below max.

My GTX480 can do max settings on Battlefield 3 at 1080p with V-Sync on. It's still a great card for the price and the big issue I have with card is the heat. When my flatmates moaned about how cold it was during winter, I simply said "what winter?" because my room was always 30c with the GTX480.

When you cant play your games at max with an acceptable frame rate then its time to upgrade, until then stick with what you have and upgrade something else in your rig.

I've got two GTX480's at 2560x1440 and I can play battlefield 3 @ high without problem with vsync on. I thought the stuttering was because of a vram issue, but I found out this week it is not as with vsync on all is good. 2 GTX 480's is about the same performance as one GTX680. I've seen a comparison and it even said the GTX480's gave higher fps.
Do keep in mind GTX480 does output a lot of noise and heath ;)

Given the price differential between the two I think I could live with the increased heat and noise for casual gaming, especially when the 480 gives very good performace for the price.

The 480 is good value at the moment. As others have said it is loud at full load and does chuck out a lot of heat. Just make sure you have a good quality PSU.

Yeah... at 30fps. Most people don't consider that acceptable. The review here shows the GTX580 only gets 43fps and the GTX470 is 30fps.

The GTX480 is a decent card if you're on a budget but don't pretend it's some miracle card. It won't manage 60fps in BF3 with max settings.

yeh, still all good... i have a 5870 with1 gb which can run bf3 at 1440p with all high settings with no jutter at all

+1

I found my 480 before selling it ran BF3 on high settings but still encountered drops below 60FPS. So i upgraded to 480 SLI, which handled Ultra Settings quite nicely until of course all the action was kicking off. I found my cards reached 100 oc which for me was excessivly hot. Probably due to poor cooling or the fact the cards were sandwhiched together :/

The 680 runs it really nicely maxed out and occasionally dips but not too often.

Single 480 is more than enough for 1080P now and will be be for some time. If you read most professional reviews they actually would recommend a 560Ti at that res at the moment and a 480 will definitely outclass a 560Ti by an appreciable margin. Sure if you have the budget and play well above 1080p then you will benefit from something newer and more powerful but for the £175 odd they are going for new at the moment nothing can really touch them for price/ performance whilst still being able to manage 1080p competently assuming you don't insist that every single game must be run at the absolute max settings (because it will of course run most games out there maxed out anyway). I will soon be adding my second 480 to my water-cooled setup (thereby negating the two major downsides of the card - heat/noise from stock cooler) and expect this will last me a fair while yet
