Dyslexia

Ah that's great, mine was really quite goddy and I had no idea what it was all about so it was painfully obvious I was not catholic.

Your son's sounds brill, open minded and not pushy, perfect. How many in the whole school? Is it in the sticks?

Yeah, it is in the 'sticks' I suppose......

The whole school has about 300 students, about 60 or so per year group. It is oversubscribed, but we do have the two most successful Grammar schools in the country as well as several publoc schools which does balance it out a bit.

But for someone in my sons position the Catholic School was the best choice.

One of the things I hate is people who call themselves Dyslexic, just because they can't (or can't be bothered to) spell correctly.

As Dimple posted, Dyslexia is far more than just being unable to spell. Basically speaking, do be diagnosed as dyslexic, you have to show a very wide range of abilities in the different tests (it's all about ratios), for example, I am officially dyslexic (an no, not self diagnosed), and whilst I'm in the top 1% of people in one of the tests (with a couple others in the top 10%) I have several in the bottom 10% (including short-term memory).

Luckily, I've managed to develop methods to cope, so I've not suffered too badly, unlike a few other people I know, who have a lot more problems.

Even though I am dyslexic, I don't use it as a scapegoat if I make any mistakes, I always try my best to get it right, as I believe others should do (although some have it a lot worse than me, so should be given some slack)

Edit:
So, does dyslexia get better with age? I dont mean cured. And is it age or, like, learning how to do things different and cope? It seems that adult dyslexics do a lot better with it later in life?

I'm no expert, but I suspect that as you learn mechanisms and processes that help to overcome your disadvantage then it does become progressively easier.

I would think it is similar to the coping mechanisms I learned in dealing with depression...it never really goes away, you learn to manage it instead.

I never had any help in school with dyslexia because a) the teachers never picked up on it and b) they gave you the impression that dyslexia was just seeing words mixed up on a page, that seemed to be a key prerequisite for determining whether you had dyslexia which I never had a problem with so I just assumed I was slower than most, it wasn't until I went to an adult learning centre later in life to improve upon my English literacy skills that I was officially diagnosed, I know you can't change the past but I think I would have done a lot better at school if I had been diagnosed and helped back then.

Turned into a nice thread this has. It's interesting to hear different dyslexic folk and how they respond to other dysleixc, how they respond when their dyslexia is picked up on. I wonder how much of those responses lie in how they dealt with it when they were younger, how socity treated them etc.

Mind you, the whole forum crew seems to be a bit ***** up a little in one way or another. Different ailments and breaks in their/our beings. I know I use forums as a bit of a crutch at times, dunno if crutch is the right word... hmmm, rambling, best go to bed really :D

nn :)

My English is okay, it's not great but neither is it bad. I make tons of mistakes in my writing because I never paid attention in my English classes. But over the years coming on forums has helped allot with my English as its progressed from "text type" to comprehensible English because users would point out the mistakes.

Google Chrome has helped allot with my spelling too because of the spell checking feature and when something is spelled wrong, Chrome will highlight that and I've learned how to correctly spell said word.

I still have trouble when using "'" and "," with where and when there used.

I have aspergers, not tested as dyslexic but I struggle no end at forming and making sentences that are grammatically correct; I'm awful at spelling as well. I can't post something that doesn't read well so I'm constantly editing and rewording things before I post. I've already edited what I'm writing now like 10 times :). Google chrome has helped me a lot and random posts on forums helps me correct my errors :). Aspergers is my biggest issue though and I hate it, but I have learned to deal with it and adapt how I socialize but its still damn hard and I'm so gullible its untrue :(

I can't stand it when people claim they are dyslexic just because they can't spell. I'm diagnosed dyslexic, and it manifests itself in an atrocious short term memory. No problem with spelling, or writing in general.

Dumb people seem to pull the dyslexia card like a fat person and thyroid problems.

People also think they could easily pass a dyslexic test and many people on here have claimed 'their mates' did it and got free computers.
I worked with 2 Dyslexic testers and they said the tests are setup in such a way that even them knowing exactly how it works would have a problem passing them.
Most people think it's all about reading & writing which yo uknow it isn't.

it's become the go-to answer for when they make a mistake.
"I'm feeling dyslexic today" is a classic that gets pulled out again and again in the office.
people often doubt I'm dyslexic as I read so much (and fast) but again, short term/working mem and stupidly low writing/spelling scores are my issues.
when I was at college I wasn't even offered another assessment because "it would be a waste of time, you're reading is fine!"

&& That's the most disgusting post. You can't just say that....

Aids just deal with it.
Cancer just deal with it..
Malaria just deal with it...
Tuberculosis just deal with it....

You get me? Your disgusting!

You just listed illnesses lol.

He's talking about a disability which IMO a lot of people claim to have but have never properly been diagnosed.

After re-reading I did miss the point. Now I am angry. lol I thought someone was taking the pea out of someone with Dyslexia... is there a disability for what I just done I may have it.

To be honest it's probably my fault as you're the second person to misunderstand the OP.

As a result I've edited the OP and included two comments that were posted prior to where I originally started.
