GTX 580 1.5 gb SLI - future proof?

I know there is no such thing as future proof in terms of hardware, but bear with me for this one.
A friend of mine is upgrading from his gtx580 (to you know what) and offerd me his card. Seeing as prices for used GTX580 has dropped in Denmark recently we agreed on a price of 1900 dkk aprox 210 £ which was a great deal for me. His card is a only 6 months old EVGA 1.5 gb GTX580 SC with 9 years warranty left. So I was ready to buy the card and put a waterblock on it and get going and I knew if I had one GTX580 I would probably end up buying another cheaply down the road for SLI.
But after seeing various benchmarks where the gtx580 preformed well, I noticed different user comments on the vram size, saying that the gtx580 1.5 gb would struggle in the future with new games because of the "only" 1.5 gb ram.
So maybe this bargain isn't a bargain after all? I don't want to end up with 2 gtx580 + 2 waterblocks and then having problems with games in the near future.
Then I might as well break the bank right now and get a gtx680 + waterblock in the first place, but the other solution would save me money and allow for a cheap upgrade with sli. What do you think? Is the vram problem made up?
I game at 1080 P and no 3 d and will probably still be playing at this resolution for years to come.

Cheers

P.s. Sorry for the long explanation

At 1080p you will find very few games that can cause memory problems with the GTX 580. You need to pay less attention to the 1.5GB memory on the 580 at this resolution as the raw GPU power is more than enough for this card to perform.

This will be the case for at least this year and probably next year as well because until new consoles are released we are likely to receive the same throttled ports for these powerful cards.

The GTX580 is a great card. I just upgraded mine to a GTX680 and to be honnest, I cannot notice any real difference between them at 1920x1200. The 580 will be good for a few years yet.

So I should go ahead and buy it?
Can a game demand more memory than a gfx card can offer?

This is a really good price for a great card. I had one and sold it recently as I'm playing a lot less games.

You really need to ignore the vram because you are more likely to run out of performance before vram with a GTX 580 which could take a while at 1080p.

You need to check on the warranty.

From what I've read the free or paid for extended 10 year warranty is non-transferrable unless this changes under the new EVGA warranty terms:

EVGA Warranty Changes

Full details of the changes will be released on 2 April.

Currently:

The EVGA extended warranty is non-transferable. Products purchased second hand, from a non-authorized seller, or from an auction site do not carry any extended warranty.

Its got not enough vram, you need at least 4 Gb vram and tri SLI GTX 680 to play the latest games without lag spikes at 1080p.

I do not personally believe what I wrote above, but I'm just trying to fit in with what the majority seem to believe.

And yet there wasn't a person in this thread who said anything like that.

The "majority" in this thread said the OP would be fine with the 1.5GB GTX 580 @ 1080p.

You must have meant to post in another thread.

As most people have said, should do just fine, and seems a good price.

Nah, I was just being sarcastic and making fun in general.

ok, seems like I am going to pull the trigger then and get this card.

I did notice that, but figured I would just RMA it through my friend if I ever ran into problems with the card. So as long as we stay friends for the next 9 years I should be ok :-)

I think it depends what u want. If you want absolute max eye candy i.e ultra settings all round, then you might be disappoint.

If you will settle for high fps but maybe less than ultra settings you will be fine.
