So I have got £2,600.00 to build a new system this month, I'm looking at it being a good all rounder to see me through college and university, plenty of photo editing, video editing, web design and the like....

I really didn't think I could hold off until the launch of Ivybridge but with it hitting at the end of the month and hearing all the good reports on it I'm considering holding off another few weeks...

Question is am I going to see a massive difference between the 3930K Sandybridge-E and the 3770K Ivybridge in terms of performance?

Fully Multithreaded apps 3930 is faster by approx 40%
Singlethreaded the 3770 is faster by approx 10%

Both will be great, I'd suggest the 3930 as the areas in which you will be actually wanting the cpu grunt such as video rendering will (should) be fully multithreaded and take advantage of the 6 cores, vs the 4 slightly faster cores of the 3770k

I plan on studying Comp Science, hopefully at St Andrews or Cambridge if I can get the grades I'm predicted to get

Another option would be X79 + 3820 now, and upgrade to IB-E down the line? Should be a simple CPU drop-in.

3820s are cheap too, and even without them being a "k" chip, will overclock like beasts :)

Mine's sat here at 5GHz at the moment.

What board do you have again....not sure if youve already said...

For Uni, I would go for a cheap as chips Ivy Bridge setup, I would not bother too much with the high-end stuff for now and blow the remainder on booze and birds.

This. An overclocked IB CPU will be more than enough for Computer Science. I recently (June?) graduated in Comp Sci and had a Q6600 for the 3 years and had no problems at all! The extra cash for Uni will definitely be more appreciated than a 3930K over a 3770K ;)

As a first year computer scientist I can tell you that you do not need a powerful PC for stuff in first year - to be honest, from what i can see, any computer built in the past 3 years could cope with the requirements for any of the stuff we do at the moment - of course I know the feeling, i got a decent PC before I went off to uni because i thought i might need it! I now realise I didn't need it (wanted it anyway for gaming and folding) for comp sci but don't waste your money by going for really high end stuff, just put it towards good quality components and a SSD.

Something like this, but I'd wait for Z77 and Ivy next month, just to see prices and price drops more than anything as it will be marginal increases in power, and you will need a case and power supply and stuff like that.
