Speaker wire

Hi folks,

am looking for a bit of guidance regarding speaker wire. I've got a quite old now (about 10 years old) Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 speaker system, which I'm very fond of. However, the leads are not long enough for me to mount them where I wanted, so I've had to buy phono extention cables.

Surely I can buy the cable and affix my own plugs. I started looking for speaker cables and got completely lost with all the different impedences that there are. What's the best buying advice when looking for this? I'm no audiophile but I'd like my speakers to still sound as best the can.

The only details I can see of my speaks is DTT2200 on the sub/amp combined unit.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The speakers are only 6watts each so just about any speaker wire should will do.

So the impedence only matters when you are using high powered speakers?

Cable impedance only matters if your using very long cable runs. Any 1.5mm copper cable should suit your needs.

Looking at http://imgc.classistatic.com/cps/kjc/120306/252r1/32866me_20.jpeg you'll need either a mono RCA / phono cable per speaker or a length of coaxial cable and phono plugs. Normal speaker cable is no good.

Thanks for the pointer - where's best to look for said cables.... I really don'tknow what I'm looking for...

How long do the cables need to be? I have a bag full of random cables in my attic, including some RCA and - which may be most useful to you - RCA extensions. Could send them to you for cost of postage?

Thanks for the offer. I didn't see your response until now. I found some RCA extension cables in one of my boxes of cables and it's working fine. Just got to be careful not to pull the cable otherwise the plug/socket comes apart and it's at the most inaccessible place in my room.

The cables I've got are quite thick and unsightly - is there a more discrete alternative to using this sort of cable? Apart from the cable being 2 core I don't know anything about it.

If you fancy doing a bit of soldering you could. From the picture jellybeard posted you would just need to buy some phono plugs and solder them on. Just make sure you get the phases right or it will sound odd.

If your not fussed about the quality of the cables just pick up some long cheap thin phono cables and split them.

...That a bit on the thin side..

But It will be great your door bell....
