Virgin Media new STM today

Wow! and there was me always worried about going over.

So if iplayer and iTunes etc don't count towards it, is it the same for Steam? That would be my biggest allowance "hit", say a Summer or Xmas sale.

the cap applies to all traffic as Nymins has already pointed out.

The allowances have always been daily. Its not just for p2p, its for everything though (any download or upload performed).

But it says
This policy does not impact any applications other than Peer to Peer, so things like watching iPlayer, online gaming, making calls via Skype, downloading music tracks from iTunes or streaming them from Spotify and sending an email or normal browsing are unaffected.

I think that means P2P is shaped all the time on certain ports (well I know Newsgroups are shaped on certain ports, but not 443), rather than P2P being the only thing counting towards your download allowance.

As one of those going from 50 to 100. I think that's reasonable, 20GB is a large game for example and if you get throttled its only to our original speed.

How much are things like newsgroups being throttled by and when though?

But it says

you're selectively quoting. go back and read it in context.

How does file sharing traffic management work?

We moderate the total volume of file sharing traffic on our network between 5pm and midnight on weekdays and midday and midnight on weekends. This policy, which applies to all broadband packages, is restricted to Peer to Peer (“P2P”) applications which are commonly used to distribute large amounts of data.

This policy does not impact any applications other than Peer to Peer, so things like watching iPlayer, online gaming, making calls via Skype, downloading music tracks from iTunes or streaming them from Spotify and sending an email or normal browsing are unaffected.

It's important to remember that these traffic management policies only apply at peak times when speeds are most likely to be affected by people using more than their fair share. Outside of peak times we do not manage traffic.

it's quite evident from reading the first sentence that the management for file sharing is entirely separate from the normal usage allowance.

Only sky will bring 80/20 12th April with totally UNLIMITED and no nasty traffic management, p2p throttling or other FUP at all. I think 100 Meg down to 50 Meg is pretty poor and expecially these upload 10 Meg down to 2.5 Meg is really awful. If Sky bring FTTC to my area, I take Sky rather than Virgin Media 100/10. I think Sky FTTC will win head down! Exspecially cheaper price and non-STM and even better upload speed of 20 Meg.

Wel that's a pretty clear and easy to understand table...

Someone clear it up I had virgin 100MB since September . I understood there to be no limits, except throttling of P2p and usenet before midnight, so now there is limits?

So I can only download 30GB of data between 10 and 9pm ? ? LOL, that's like 30 mins of downloading or something. What a crock

You only get reduced to 50Mbps speeds...

what's my upload limit, that seems to be incomprehensible from that table? ... 12GB up? .. That's only about 3 hours if for example, I was 'seeding' at max, so now I have to start worrying about whether I'm uploading too fast or not. jesus christ, that's why i'm on 100MB I shouldn't have to care.

120 = the last column "100"

As 120 is just a speed upgrade of the vanilla "100" tier.
That's what I was thinking but I have been constantly told (even 2 mins ago) that the upload speed of 100Mb (120Mb) will 12Mb or 10%. There is no mention of that in the table.

The reason I currently pay for the top package with VM is to avoid this kind of stuff.

It's time to start looking for alternatives if it comes to the new 120mb package.

It's confusing, but it's like that I think to ensure that your get the full '10', i.e. right now the 100MB is actually 110MB, but overheads take it down to about a 100. ....... maybe...... who knows.
