If I opt for either sli 680 or cfx 7970 will I get 120fps (or damn close to) if I turn the settings down in BF3?

I have a single 1080p 120hz monitor.

Depends how low? But yes you should do. Does it make sense to chug up £850 for 2 cards to be 120FPS capped? No not really...

I don't think your playing experience will be all that difference with one card with settings on Ultra running at 60-120 FPS....

1 * 680 can do that - I speak from experience.

Got to stop telling myself 2gb vram on the 680 isnt an issue in 6-12 months time....i know it will be though :-(

Yeah you will easily get that with SLI 680. My CF 7950 goes between 100-120 most of the time on Ultra with 4xMSAA. Lowest I've seen is 80 in really large shoot-outs.

Nvidia cards tend to do better anyway. My previous 570 could get upto 70fps+ overclocked to 580 speeds with MSAA turned off. I tried a single 7950 on its own and it got about the same as my 570, which proves my point with Nvidia having the edge for BF3. You can get away with 100-120fps with an AMD card but you might have to push them a bit more.

If I were you, and I had enough money to buy SLI 680 I would get that. The reason I didn't was because my screen favours AMD technology for 3D.

It won't be an issue.

Do you really think game developers are going to develop a game engine that alienates the mass majority of the PC gaming community, i.e. those with 2GB of VRAM or under? Of course they won't - not this soon. 2GB cards haven't been mainstream for anywhere near long enough.

There will come a time when it probably will be an issue but from a truly speculative point of view I would say this point is a minimum of at least 3 years away.

Is that at 1080p, because im thinking 7950s could be a good buy if i stay at that resolutions....which to be honest i think i will. Got to think about my 750w psu too...680 sli would work, ati not so sure

Yeah 1080p.

I will say this though, if you do go AMD route be prepared for some driver issues. You might fine, but I just though I'd warn you. There were a few things I was unprepared for when I got my 7950, which I made a thread on. I solved most of my issues in the end, but having not used an AMD card in a while and certainly having never used Crossfire before, it was a little bit frustrating to begin with.

Ok. I have a 5970, which is technically cfx, but never had to deal with ccc as it appears differntly.

Ati drivers are not the best, but i have cfx on my alienware m18x and it works okish. Dont really use if for gaming much though.

I think 680 for me...just had a tax rebate which will pay for one of them :-)

I really want 120fps, it does make sure a difference! Dont think people think its worth it.... I do!

It'll make a difference having more FPS but it'll make no difference at all to be "locked" to 120FPS.

Just play on high without MSAA if you really want to be locked at the refresh rate but as I say I think the IQ decrease would be more noticeable than a constant 120 frame rate. Why do you want this out of interest?

As I said previously, if you play on max settings with a 680 you're looking at a minimum of 55-60 during firefights and then averaging around 90ish. You aren't going to feel any difference between 90-120.

But if you aren't going to listen then fine - it's your experience and your money :p

I just remember playing bfbc2 locked at 120fps and it was so fluid.

Do you think i could get 120fps with 1 680 on high with 2xx aa?

I could see a difference between 90 and 120. Its half as good as going from 60 to 120! Lol

I want 120 fps on my 120hz as i feel it lags on anything less! Bring back CRT is what i say.

No it doesn't. If you can tell the difference between 90 frames and 120 frames I want your eyes. And then I'm going to clone them and sell them for lots of money.

Seriously though it must be your perception. I can guarantee that if you played without a frame counter you'd be none the wiser as to when 90 or 120 frames are being rendered.

Do you think i could get 120fps with 1 680 on high with 2xx aa?

No. You'd need to go down to High settings with MSAA disabled and maybe even FXAA disabled as well (Post Processing). You'll then have to deal with jaggies... all for what?

Anyway if your mind can't be changed and you really want to be frame locked then you're going to need 2 680's and you're still probably going to have to turn MSAA down or off due to BF3 having some fairly low minimums (as above: around 55-60).

Ill start with 1 and see how i get on.

You have a 120hz monitor, dont you think the mouse cursor on the desktop glides like it is on ice at 120hz rather than 60hz?

Oh yeah definitely.

Getting a 120Hz monitor was one of my best purchases (along with my keyboard, SSD, graphics card and 3D vision kit :p).

You just don't need to be at 120FPS capped that's all.
