Grain added to Blu-rays

TV shows are the worst. There's no grain at all in Downton Abbey! I've managed to add some by editing the files in Windows MovieMaker, but it still doesn't feel like it should.

It might be true because I don't understand how a film can have NO noticable grain on DVD, and then TONS on the Blu-ray.

I always thought it's because blu ray is higher definition and so shows higher detail, therefore the film grain becomes more evident/visible. Some grain looks great imo and helps to create that filmic look.

Older films such as The Godfather, Exorcist, early Bond etc, all have natural grain but it's not in any way distracting, the blu ray versions look spectacular imo, on the other hand The French Connection blu ray version at times looks overly grainy to the point where it masks detail and looks generally poor, especially on indoor shots, apparently William Friedkin adjusted the original colour pallette of the film for the blu ray version and tbh he made a right mess of it, looks bloody awful at times.

Errr... Downton Abbey, like the majority of television shows, wasn't shot on film. They used the Arriflex D-21, a digital camera.

Just so surprised by the lack of grain... you'd expect it from HDTV, but it's never there...

I can show you how to fix it by adding the grain that's supposed to be there. It's not a difficult process, though it does take some time.

:)

Has anyone got Generation Kill on bluray? Because at times, that can look quite grainy, when there really wasn't a need to it to be grainy.

I get rather annoyed with the Battlestar Galactica blurays at times. There is tons of grain at times that ruins scenes. I'm not sure if it's post processing or from filming, but some scenes don't have grain at all, when it's supergrainy it just adds nothing to the overall look.

agreed. some stuff just isnt worth owning on blu-ray. i did pay about £120 for the box set but the content was superb so i wasnt too annoyed.

grain if often from digital cameras not getting enough light in, just like using an iphone when not in superbright conditions, grain central

I've just started watching BSG on Blu Ray and it does seem that some scenes are much more grainy. Bright scenes seem OK, but anything in the CIC can get quite grubby.

From what I gather, Battlestar Galactica was shot on film, Kodak Vision stock to be precise.

Grain can be much more noticeable in dark areas with certain stocks and film speeds. Sometimes it can be a compromise between the stock looking fantastic in the majority of lighting conditions used in the film/show, versus that of dark ones.

It could also be a mistake made by the DOP and it's not unheard of either for the negative producer to make claims about the film stock only for it not to be as good as hoped, or a certain batch wasn't so good.

As somebody else pointed out, it's similar to how with films shot digitally will tend to have a lot of noise in the dark areas when using high ISO which introduces a lot of it. In general though, grain looks far more pleasing than digital noise does.
