I'm considering the unthinkable - going from a 7970 to 680...

Thing is i only play BF3 (but i love it) and will be getting a 1080p monitor soon maybe 120hz, and i the 680 does seem to get quite a few extra FPS in this title...

My 7970 does seem to overclock well - to 1200/1650 currently (though i did get a weird no sound bug the other night so i'm a little bit suspicious i haven't got it 100% stable yet, and it is quite noisy with the fan up), but then the 680s do as well...

Am i mad?

So you can already play the game on ultra with very good frame rates yet you wish to spank some serious money on a new card just for a few extra FPS that your eyes will not be able to see in reality anyway?

Rich or foolish. :p

thanks for all the responses so far.

I'm feeling like i should at least get the monitor first and then see how it copes

i'm not made of money, but i don't really have any other expensive habits, and me and the girlfriend have been talking about having kids so in a way the next year might be the last decent amount of gaming i get to...

Happy with my 680 performance, but I would not upgrade from a 7970. Going from a 580 to 680 made little noticeable difference for me. Sure, benchmarks are 40% better, but everything I play holds 60fps @ 1920x1200 on both.

Not woth the cost and hassle for just ~10% more performance. Only change if you fancy a proper 3D setup.

Considering your HD7970 is clocked at 1200 on the core there would be little reason to at best side grade to a GTX680 especially as you would have to pay ~£50 for the privilege.

I would imagine at those clocks there would be little to no difference in fps (possibly with the HD7970 edging ahead) and certainly no difference in noticable performance from a gameplay perspective.

I would say a 1.2ghz core 7970 would be on par with an overclocked 680, it's a side step that's going to cost you.
