I've gone from 2700k to 2500k and am very surprised

Now that most of my video work is complete I have decided to have a change over, and also wanted to free up some money for a new graphics card.

The mrs never lets me spend money out of the bank  so I always have to find things to sell to free up money.

anyway....

Changed this,

i7 2700k @ 4.6GHz inc HT
Corsair H100 Hydro
Corsair 600T Case
Corsair AX850 PSU

to this,

i5 2500k @ 4.6GHz
Corsair A50 Cooler
Corsair 300R Case
Corsair 600w PSU

The money left over was used for a 2GB Sapphire 7850 (and a little left over for the bank) :D

I was shocked when I ran the same video tests on the i5 that I ran on the i7 last week. You'd think that the i5 setup would be hotter and slower, but that wasn't the outcome

i7
1hr 45mins Encode time
Temps peaked at 72c

i5
1hr 43mins Encode time
Temps peaked at 57c

The only thing I can think of is that the build of x264.exe I'm using (latest version and supports HT) doesn't properly use Hyper Threading, and just by having HT enabled increased the temps  My i5 was only installed late last night so the termal compound hasn't had time to bed itself in yet, so hopefully I'll shave another 1-2c off

anyway, I was quite surprised.....not that it really matters that much as most of the video work is now done anyway.

Just thought I'd share.....not played with the graphics card yet (will do that this weekend :D)

So A50 is better than H100, which costs 4x more money? :)

The 2500k generates less heat than the 2700k. (as far as I'm aware.) Also, he's changed the case and a lot of other components.. so it's not a fair comparison. What graphics card did he have before? Was it dumping heat into the case? Was he running the CPU graphics, so the chip hotter anyway? Was airflow bad in the other case etc.

A good result for sure :-) You must be very happy about the upgraded system.

600t case before so MUCH better airflow than the 300r I have now. I originally used a cheap Radeon 5450 before so a lot less heat than the new 7850.

If anything my setup now would be much hotter so this result is even more unbelivable. That said, I do believe HT adds quite a bit extra heat alone which has to answer the differences in temps.
