USB headsets ≤ £50 .. what are my options?

Up until recently I was using a regular (cheapo) gaming headset plugged into the audio jack of my Logitech G510, but after about 5months of use I'm not really a fan of this particular 'gaming keyboard' for actual gaming. The plan is to sell off the expensive PoS and put some of the money towards a new headset.

Here's the catch though, it has to have a USB connection.

My PC is in a rather difficult to navigate alcove next to my desk, and seeing as my speakers are currently plugged in my motherboard's audio jack (no soundcard), and my next keyboard won't have an audio jack, USB connectivity is the only option for convenience.

I'm not an audiophile by any stretch; preferably I'm just looking for a well-made, reliable headset with as good sound and mic as I can get for the price - preferably <£50.

Thanks for any replies.

Are they mainly for gaming? I am not personally a fan of '7.1' headsets, but the Plantronics GameCom 780 7.1 Surround Sound USB Gaming Headset are getting good reviews all over the internet.

Yeah they're mainly going to be for gaming; my missus can tolerate films being played out loud, but games not so much.

Thanks for the link, that's another headset I've been looking at - my only problem is that I have an oddly large head, and I've read a few reviews which say they're pretty tight and uncomfortable in some cases.

Can anyone with a big head who's tried them comment on this?

I've always had confidence in Logitech's build quality.

How would you rate the sound on them?

One thing to note is that when you first take them out of the box they are surprisingly light. But they seem nicely put together and I've had no issues in the 4 months or so I've been using them.

I'm not an expert on audio, but I'd rate the sound quality as high, I certainly prefer it to the Creative Fatality headset that I was using previously. This may only be a personal thing though.

So the Plantronics are looking like the best option so far. I read some reviews and it looks as though the popular opinion is that they're about as good as you can get for the price.

Thanks for everyone's recommendations so far..

EDIT: Just out of interest, what is the value comparison like with regards to buying a pair of regular headphones and a desktop mic? I'm not particularly interested in this, but it has been recommended to me by a few friends who insist that buying actual headphones gets you the better sound quality for the same price.

desktopmic's are not too clever and the plantronics dsp mic is one of the clearest I've ever heard.

You will get bettr sound with a normal pair of headphones and there are some good ones within your price bracket. They will not be USB though. As has been said above, as desktop mic is not the way to go if you do decide to. Get a clip-on one instead like the Speedlink SPES.

I have a Plantronics GameCom 777 headset. The included Dolby sound card is detachable

I bought it to use with Skype - which it does pretty well. I use my own stereo USB soundcard.

However, I do find it a bit tight for extended use. Maybe I too have a big head? :)
