Sapphire 7970 Toxic 6GB

I think you will find that this card has been designed to run 6 monitors.

Some may have noticed that Sapphire did an "eyefinity 6" series of cards.

Who here would like to lay a bet that 6gb vram is wasted on six monitors?

Because by my reckoning that's 1gb per screen texture storage.

Just remember - horses for courses.

Some plum connecting it to a 1080p display and then telling his mates = stupid.

Codemasters using it at E3 to show off Dirt : Arena or whatever the new game is called? = clever.

Good for shows, not really much good for the average user, but it's good marketing for Sapphire.

Don't see anyone at home using 6 screens, 3 i can see the point even if i didn't like it when i tried it, but i don't see anyone like using 6 at all.

It's a very niche scenerio though, as people would need something like 3 of this card in crossfire to be able to push the more demanding titles on the six screens. And quite frankly, not really sure if people would gamble spending over £1500 on graphic cards that are not back up by reliable drivers...

Marine-RX179: The Catalyst aren't that bad now, the Catalyst 12.4 beta are in fact very very good.
Are you talking about single GPU card or crossfire support? Cause drivers for crossfire support seems to always been the case of fix one thing, break another...or so I hear from people that got crossfire setup.

It's a niche card.

I mean hands up how many people bought the 2gb Sapphire 5870 Toxic?

Again, though, that was designed for Eyefinity.

Same goes for the 3gb 580. That was designed with either SLI and surround in mind or hobbyist 3d people.

I mean tbh the I7 3980x or whatever it's called is also a niche product. It's absolutely pointless for gaming because the 2600k can do anything it can in games. But, you will always have a small foolish group that buy one and then put it in their desktop thinking it will make games faster.

TBH this card should be applauded. Loudly. Quite simply as without it you would need to take the "professional" route to connecting 6 monitors and that would cost you thousands of pounds.

For any one else though? it's completely pointless other than a willy waving indulgence.

But it does have its uses if you look at it with your sensible cap on :)

Sad to see ppl preempting the old VRAM arguement that has afflicted the past 2 months worth of threads on OCUK :(
IF nobody has brought it up, leave it before another thread is ruined with this pointless argument. It's almost like you're baiting someone to start it off again, PLEASE DON'T.

BACK ON TOPIC; I'm sure 6GB will come in useful one day but I suspect the GPU will be under powered/ missing features by that time.
Having said that, this is a niche card for the limited users who may actually use 6GB, I suppose these users should be happy that AMD have provided a product that meets this demand. If 6GB is not required to meet your needs, this is not the card for you. That doesn't make it a bad card though, it's just over-spec'ed for your requirements.

Marine-RX179: Single card, haven't dabble with crossfire for sometime now.

Lets just wait for the reviews on the 7970 Toxic 6GB before writing the card off, but I think Sapphire will have a big hit with this card.

I am sure it was vega from this forum that picked up 6gb cards near release as he gamed using a 5 monitor setup. He said memory use was to close to filling up on the 3gb cards.

it hasnt got 6gb memory:confused: its 2 gpus with 3gb each but only the main chips memory is being used the 2nd gpus memory is purely frame buffering 1st gpu

hence 2 580 in sli doesnt have 6gb in total

plus the 7970 was slightly crippled hardware wise on some features, i remember seeing an article when it came out about the reduction of some features purely as they wanted to hold it back so to bring out a better 2 chip card for when the 7990 was released...ill see if i can find the info...

and i find a higher memory card benificial as i game at 2560x1600 and a lot of other do too + muti screen players

dont like it dont buy it....everyone like a moan dont they :D
