Ok, so, I'm starting to think water might be a bit of a pain over the next few years whilst at uni, just for moving around, plus the hassle of setting it up and the such like.

However I am sick and tired of the noise coming out of my 480, and with the 680s out, I thought I might try and pick up a 580 about now...

Now, what I'm looking for isn't particularly performance related, hell, there isn't really anything wrong with my 480 performance wise...

What I'm looking for is something quiet, quiet and quiet. Oh and preferably looks nice...

Doesn't really matter if it's 1.5 or 3gb...

Kind of thinking twin Frozr/lightning, phantom, direct cu II?

Anyone have actual noise stats on these rather than just 'I have one and it's queit'... Although if you have one and it's loud I might be more interested xD

May move it to a low airflow case at some point as well, or something like the 550d/r3 or the such like... Not sure yet...

Gainward Phantom's are the quietest 580 coolers I have heard.

But why spend £300 on a 580 when you can get a very quiet 680 for £80 more?

Because I don't need the performance of a 580, never mind a 680. I might be able to justify the 3gb 580 for skyrim über textures, but even that's pushing it slightly. As I've said, there's no performance issues with my 480, in fact I'd upgrade to a 570 2.5gb version probably, although I'm not sure about paying more money for a card that's the same speed...

No point in saying that.. I did specifically ask which was quietest.

My phantom. Just put a modest overclock on it for this vid. 1050 mV for 850/1700/2010.

From the side you can't really hear it with the door on. But listen in particular to the bits where I put the phone near the card or at the back of the case. It isn't loud but it makes a hella annoying high pitched whirring sound.

Most telling is 2:43.

Oh, iphone records really quiet so you need to turn the volume up, LOL.

Ignore the mess in the bottom of my case, waiting for an acrylic cover to be fabbed for me ;D.

As with all cards, anything and everything can effect the noise, from heatsinks with fan fins too close, to the fan just happening to be slightly unbalanced on your card, or your particular psu/gpu combo causing a bit of capacitor squeal. If you want absolute silence you'll be disappointed, I prefer to go for something where if it comes to it you can remove the fans quite easily and use a fan bracket and some spare fans(quiet 92/120mm's) incase the fan goes or is just too loud.

Either way, I really wouldn't be spending money on a 580gtx, if you went 680gtx it would cost you £80 more, but would likely make that back if you sold that in two years compared to a 580gtx, they simply aren't well priced yet, there could be some more great deals on the 580gtx to come, maybe more so when the 670gtx/ti turns up and pushes them further south.

A 570gtx is a much better price, less memory, but such better value(circa £200 right now) that you could simply get one now, sell it in a few months if 7950/670/660 prices are very good or maybe move again when the next set of cards come out and you find something like a 7950/670/680 being way cheaper maybe the end of the year.
