Hi guys,
Have a GTX580 1.5gb since March '11,great card, great performance on my Dell 27'' 1920x1200.Anyway I upgraded to a Dell U3011 last month(great monitor)but as I knew my 580 struggles when trying to crank up the eye candy.
Have been offered £250 for my 580 but still don't have the extra £300+ to add to buy a GTX680(if I was to buy a 680 I would probably go for a 4GB @2560X1600 res).
Anyway as from what I have been reading the GTX680 is very good card but is just a stop gap to respond to AMD 7970.
So in short don't want to pay massive over the top money now for 680 if the ''super'' Kelper cards are launched at end of year.
Only game I really play apart from BF3 is Project Cars (beta) which wont go full retail until start of 2013,this game is really pushing graphical boundaries.
So do I struggle on with 580 and see what comes before end of year?
Any advice appreciated.
(BTW guys I dont want the thread turning into AMD v Nvidia)as most of the threads on the gpu section have been destroyed by fanboys of both sides.

Get another 580 and go sli. It will last you another 2/3 years of 1080p gaming at very very acceptable performance.

Just saying.

Well 250 quid is a good offer for your 580, i just sold my 570 for 200, and can buy a 580 for 220 ish on the bay. At that resolution a 2gb 680 would be fine, no need for 4gb unless you are going multi monitor. If i was you i would sell the 580 and get the cheapest 2gb 680 you can. No point waiting 6+ months in the hope for a card which may be no better or a silly price.

Really just can't see nvidia launching a bigger kepler this year so i'd go for it and why not a 4gb version, don't think you'll need it but at least you'll be future proofing.

All 680's including the reference ones go to 1215Mhz with ease, this will allow all that eye candy without taking a performance hit.

Also, have you thought of the ati 7970? it's a fantastic card, overclocks very well and will eat anything thrown at it and its 3gb ram is more than ample.

Whatever you decide good luck and happy gaming. :-)

Do you currently have any issues in games? If no then wait for the GTX 780. If yes, then go for the 2GB 680, as at your res, it still performs perfectly.

Thanks for the advice guys.So you all reckon 2GB should be enough as I use only the one monitor(have no interest in multi monitor or 3D).
Have seen my Vram at 1850/1900mb on BF3 which sometime causes it to crash, have seen Project CARS hitting 1600mb.
4GB would be overkill and pricey.
Thinking of getting the Gigabyte x3 Windforce GTX680 2GB when it comes out, price will probally be around £500 so maybe I will scrape together the extra £250 for it.
There used to be day when I would always upgrade to a new GPU,but my little boy put paid to that lol(we spend all my money on him)wouldn't have it any other way.
Have used ATI/AMD cards before(last one was HD4870)but would rather stick with nVidia as Im used to the drivers.
Can't believe all the fighting between 7970 v 680 as they seem pretty much identical in performance.
As for getting another gtx580 for sli,I would have if my card was a 3GB.
Again thanks guys, will wait and see how much the windforce is.

It will all depend on what AMD do.

If AMD answer back with a card that is conclusively more powerful (and not just clocked higher, that's cheating) then Nvidia may run out of ideas with 104.

Have AMD got stuff locked down? because if not they can't release a new card. What I mean is they will have to release it as a 7970. If they rebrand exactly the same core they will land themselves in hot water.

So if they do respond and 104 was already at the limits then yes, I can see Nvidia pushing out their next line up. If not? well as we have seen Nvidia are happy to just sit back and leave prices as they are and rake in the profits.

The 570 and 580 remained at the same prices for a year or more. It was only when the 79xx cards came out (and not until a while after) that they realised they had to drop their price.

New technologies are expensive. They cost money to make and money to research. They won't do that and replace 104 and make it worth less money out of the goodness of their hearts. They will wait until they need to do it.

I think they have more pressing priorities than playing with clock speeds.

Getting some stock on the shelves in the USA would be a start !

Closing in on two weeks now and the Egg has had nothing to sell.

Which goes to show how relatively poorly they are selling in the UK if shops can keep stock.

There is GK106 coming out mid 2012 (GTX685 maybe), then the Dual version of that card (GK110) late 2012, then a big monolithic core coming out early 2013 (GK112). It's a question of how long you want to wait :)

Another couple of months will have a new, faster Geforce out, with a 384bit memory bus
