I am running a setup where I have two 5770 in crossfire, the two cards also are very close to each other on the motherboard. When I look at their temperatures on msi afterburn one of the gpu's idle at about 51 degrees and the other at 34 degrees, however when I play a game for a while and check them the gpu which idles at 51 is at about 93 degrees. Should I worry ? Is that not to hot ?

That is pretty hot although I'm sure the card can take it. The 8800gt and 48xx series ran at about 90C under load with stock coolers and I haven't heard of many of them dieing even after all these years. If you can somehow increase the airflow it should drop the temps.

I guess I could add one or two bigger fans to the case, I mean do you think I should try swapping the cars positions and run of the one that seems to stay cooler?

One of my gtx 480's also does this. I think it's because of how close the two cards are spaced to eachother, one card doesn't get enough cool air and a lot of warmth from the other card.

Not much you can do about it...
- better airflow
- buy a new mobo with better spacing
- get rid of them and get one fast car instead

While it is common for the card on top to run warmer since it's subject to all the hot air coming up from the bottom card that's a big difference in temperature.

What case do you have? Do you have any good airflow going on or just a couple of fans lobbed onto it?

It doesn't really have anything to do with heat rising, as you will also get the "top" or "primary" card being hotter in the FT02B and other cases with the vertical setup. It's more to do with the amount of area that is clear in front of the fan intake, and on most motherboards this is minimal since the secondary card will more often than not sit right next to the primary.

There's about a 1.2 inch gap between my 2 cards in my mobo standing vertically and the card on top is always about 5 degrees hotter at the same fan speed.

Quite a bit of heat comes off the PCB facing upwards from the bottom card so while there is space the card on top is sucking in hotter air than the one below so heat rising from other components in definitely a factor aswell as having a clear space in front of the fan.

Granted it will have some effect, but no where near as much as having a fan partially obstructed by a GFX card or other PCI card next to it.

I have actually made it a lot better now, what I did was swap the two cards around (this helped because my second card was a dual slot with a better cooler) and used that one on top. Now I have been running the game for about half an hour and it has only reached 70 degrees and the hot previous master card (which is now the slave) only reaches 60 which is great :) what I am going to do is also buy some bigger fans which should help the air flow more (My airflow btw is pulling in cool air from the front and side of the case up and out the back of the case) and my case is a casecom KM 6788.
