There seems to be a shortage of laptops with 17" 1080p screens at the moment. The Dell XPS17 is looking very attractive with the current discounts (a sure sign that Ivy Bridge is nearly here) but I'm happy to consider other makes that will give me similar configurability. Any other suggestions?

The Dell XPS 17 has a amazing 1080p screen , the Picture Quality has to be the best ive ever seen on a laptop

Thanks for the comments. The Samsung does look good but too gamer orientated for me and not enough CPU choice. I think may order an XPS17 in the next couple of days before the discount disappears.

Yeah, just about everything except the 3D screen! :D
It works out to about £1550 after the discount but I'd then sell my Sony E-series. I'm still not quite sure as the Sony really does everything I need except the screen's not as good as current ones and I can't add a second HDD - it can take one but Sony won't sell me the cable.

Thanks, although I don't really need another; typing this on an XPS 17 :p

All this talk makes me want another! Think I would if I could spot one with 3d screen/card and blu ray. Back-lit would be handy too.

My Spec for £950

i7-2670QM processor (2.20 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 3.10 GHz)
Windows 7 SP1 Home Premium(64 BIT)
Internal Backlit UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
17.3 FHD 3D WLED TL (1920x1080) 1080p
8192MB (2x4096) 1333MHz DDR3 Dual Channel
1TB (2x500GB) Serial ATA (7200RPM) Dual HDD
8X DVD+/-RW Drive
3GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M Graphics Card
Internal Backlit UK/Irish Qwerty Keyboard
Wireless : Europe Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030 (1x2 b/g/n+ Bluetooth Combo Card)

Only disappointment is the web-cam  , had to replace with HD

The difference on my intended spec is the extra cost for the 2.6GHz CPU, BluRay drive and three years hardware & telephone support. I really object to having to pay for telephone support which I just don't need as it's a job I used to do but I do like extended hardware support on laptops as I can't fix 'em myself.
