Hi i received my msi 6970 twin frozr 3 today but i cant get it working yet

I basically just removed my 5850 and put the new card in but it would not display ! so after messing about with it i clicked the bios switch and then it displayed the screen (no idea what it does on this card though) but the fans are on at 100% and will not take the 12.3 radeon drivers and also at bootup it tends to lock at the windows 7 welcome screen !!!

It also never came with an installation disk

I have given up for the night and will have another go tomorrow

i7 860 - 8g ram - ssd - corsair tx750

It sounds to me you got what you paid for after all it's called 'frozr' for a reason.

Does the 5850 stilll work?

If so, try reinstalling the drivers :)

Yeah the 5850 works perfectly and i have tried reinstalling the drivers and i get a message saying drivers are already installed , so i uninstalled and reinstalled and the computer locks at the windows start-up screen ...then gave up

My guess would be that it is broken then, i'd start an RMA, unless someone can think of anything else

My problem was a weird one, VNC had done something strange to the drivers so i uninstalled and reinstalled VNC, took me a while to find it

have a look in system information>components>display and see what the INF files are, mine now (correctly?) say oem49.inf (ati2mtag_NICayman section)

thats a long shot tho, especially if you dont use VNC lol

also said in device manager that the device had been disabled because it wasnt working correctly (error 43 IIRC)

apart from that try the usual chipset/bios

Thanks but i cant even get it to boot into windows no matter what position the switch is in (ie it just freezes on the windows logo screen)
RMA time i am so disappointed and i don't know if i want another one or change for another model

The 6970 Twin Frozr cards are really good. Although it seems odd that we've had two known failures of the same nature very recently. Bad batch Gibbo?

have you tried uninstalling the drivers (everything ati option in programs etc in control panel), reboot, shutdown, change card, install drivers, reboot, hey presto.

drivers generally don't like it if you just change card. had a similar problem going from a 4890 to 5850

Things have got worse as i have put my 5850 back in and its doing the same ie:
Getting stuck on the windows log on screen :( i have tried windows restore and also used the windows disk to try a repair and the best I get is that it will eventually boot into windows after about 15 mins !!!
The only thing i haven't done is reset the motherboard bios

Has this card has damaged my board ?

I doubt it would have damaged your mobo (unless it's damaged physically, when you put it in), its more likely that windows has screwed up and u will have to reinstall!

I finally got it working :) i reset the motherboard bios to default and used windows 7 disk to repair and all is well :D

How do i cancel my RMA from overclockers ?

The install disk never came with the card which is not a big problem but i would like the Msi live update program but you can only get an update from their website

Does anyone know where i can get it ?

Got it and all it did was update the cards bios..well what else would it be ?

But i must say how pleased i am with this card coming from a 5850 which was great to this as the difference and smoothness is great ...and i don't think it is worth spending more on something else as i don't think my eyes could tell the difference or am i wrong ?

hi,

sorry I only just noticed this thread, glad you got it working.

Just for reference the switch on this card switches between two BIOS's, the standard retail BIOS and a BIOS with certain limits removed and code for a cold bug fix (for LN2 OCers).

I don't usually bother with Liveupdate for VGA unless there is a problem with the VGA BIOS. Our "certified" drivers are never as up to date as the AMD catalyst drivers so I'd recommend just using Catalyst and Afterburner.

Please always use the latest BETA afterburner & if you want to really test the overclocking capabilities I'd recommend googling how to unlock the unofficial overclocking mode.
