Summer riots arsonist jailed for 11½ years

It's not like he just did it on spur of the moment. A one off lack of judgement. He has a rap sheet of 20 convictions, including going armed for robbery with knives and a machete. As said, he will be out in 5, allowing for the guilty plea and time already served.
I do sometimes wonder at the point of sentencing lengths when they aren't even going to do half of it. Spose it is a deterrent to further crime if he has the rest of it hanging over his head.

Sentances like this are a slap in the face for victims who have lost loved ones to perpetrators who have killed and recieved a lot less.

I'm not saying he does not deserve it.

Normally I read these types of stories and get really annoyed at the length of the sentence, but for once I read what he was given and thought...

(or to the same effect)

No way he will do 11 and half years, great that we are seeing people locked up, but more should have been done at the time, army on the streets imho. Nobody respects the police anymore. Plus London as whole has no community spirit, areas are being run down, for decades they have been left to rot.

Not so smug now

And the Daily Mail reactions are out again..

However I do agree with the length of the sentence. Arson is a very serious crime, and can easily result in the loss of life. Anyone who sets a building on fire should be treated by the law as doing something that is likely to cause death.

However I suspect that the big sentences they hand out here are for the sake of appeasing the public/Daily Mail, and they'll go back to weak sentencing for crimes that don't make the papers.

And over and above all of it we still live in a society that won't deal with criminals and the cause of criminals.

He also got 3 sentences for burglary outwith a dwelling totally a penalty of 3 years. They are to be run alongside the other one.

this is one thing i dislike, sentences should not run along side each other they should be cumulative.

As along side each other it's basically being unpunished for anything but the worst offence.

yeah it's not like we have laws that call for much harsher sentences when the act is done in a large crowd or anything, it's all just for the papers.....

Personally should be a life sentence, for the amount of history he destroyed. Had no right to destroy something of previous generations.
