Firstly, sorry for starting another thread regarding the buy now or wait issue, but I didn't want to hijack someone else's thread.

As far as I can tell from the information available and the helpful posts on this forum, the main differences are as follows:

1. Existing version has VAT claim back.

2. Incoming Ivy will be 5 -10% faster for CPU performance. Graphics performance comparable?

3. New model has faster hard drive at 7200rpm over existing 5400rpm.

4. New model has 16gb system memory over 8gb on existing.

5. Existing comes bundled with 3d glasses

Games wise it will mainly be used for MMORPG's, skyrim, ME3 and the likes of bioshock when it's released.

I'm not into 3d so can ignore point 5, and I don't really see points 2 and 4 making that much of a performance difference? So ignoring for the moment the not insignificant VAT back due to the imminent new version, just leaves me with the slower hard drive.

How easy is it to change out to a faster hard drive on a Samsung laptop? Also with regards the bundled software for the dial settings etc can that be easily reinstalled?

Out of interest, regarding Samsung version upgrades, what is their normal approach. Is the newer version introduced at the same non VAT back price point and the existing version discontinued, or will the existing version stay around and the new version come at a higher price.

Thank you in advance for your comments/thoughts.

Very easy to change out laptop and reinstall software...took me about a hour to swap hd and install all software, got a 128gb ssd ocz drive for 100 (reduced from 160) very happy with performance upgrade. Its a very easy upgrade.

^... What he said.

It's very easy to swap out the hard drives and all the software and drivers required to make the laptop work on a fresh install is on the DVDs that come with it and on the Samsung support site for the laptop and all the links are in the main thread for this laptop.

I'm almost certain the new Samsung will come with the radeon 7970m though, which would make it a much better choice. If its in before end of April it should qualify for the vat back deal too

The 7970M is just a rebadged 6970M too as Nvidia has done rebadging the 580M to a 675M. Non of the top mobile GPUS out with the new names currently are new just rebadged last gens models. ;)

Now I'm not one to say AMD would not do that, they most certainly would, but there has been 0 evidence to suggest this is true since they are not making 6870 chips any longer.

Are you sure purgatory? Notebookcheck seems to suggest its based on a 28nm fabrication and will actually be much quicker? Granted these could be rumours but interesting all the same..

We will probably see that at the end of the year or Q1-Q2 2013, if it is not totally made up.

Read what it says at bottom of this one GTX 675M ... Rebranded GeForce GTX 580M. AMD has done exactly the same thing this year too with its highend mobile GPUs.

Check for yourself ;).. Yes this years mobile GPUs are just renamed last gen. Don't fall for the marketing hype and blaa blaa, same chips new names that's all.

Yeah looks like you're right about the 675m and some of the 7 series cards. Rumour has it that the upcoming 680m is the new Keplar series and very fast and I did read that the upcoming 7950/7970m are based on new tech as well

The lower end parts are definitely a re badge of the previous series though. Very confusing for customers!

I know it's confusing so I will lay it out:

Up to and including GT635M = Fermi
GT640M through to GTX660M = Kepler
GTX670M and GTX675M = GTX570M/GTX580M
GTX680M = Kepler

Up to an including HD7690M = VLIW
All models above the HD7690M = Gen Next

AMD have to keep the lower models around so they can be paired with Llano in dual GPU setups.

Thank you all for the information provided.

Do we know whether the UK version will get the GTX675M or HD7970M graphics card, or maybe a choice of either?

Thanks again.

The new one (probably available in June) has GTX675M graphics. It doesn't have a 3D screen. Proc is i7-3610QM. 1.5tb 7200RPM hard drive, plus 8gb SSD.

This is why I went for it on the current model, I can't be doing with anything other than a 120Hz screen on a gaming machine. That and the VAT free thing.

What did you choose for in the end talion?
Love to look of the Samsung 700G but not sure its worth hanging around for the i7-3610QM and missing out on tax and 120Hz screen.
Decisions Decisions :/

Still dilly dallying back and forth but leaning towards the current version, particularly as it seems the UK version will get the 675M. For gaming I would have to upgrade the 5400 hard drive as load times would annoy me too much.

I'm going to hold out till towards the end of this month to see what other info is released, such as release date for new version. Ideally I want to have a laptop in place for Diablo 3 release and Guild Wars 2 / Secret World betas.

As you say, Decisions Decisions!

I read on these forums that the Samsung 700G 1.5gb harddrive (2x 750gb) run at 7200rpm ? not sure how true that is but would that help your decision?
