*** The official Sony Xperia S thread ***

HTC's phones of last year were rather poor I thought. Having loved the Nexus One and Desire, I was rather disappointed. After only about 3 minutes with a One X, I can see their build quality is perhaps better than it's ever been.

Anyway, a little O/T perhaps.

Yeah, those cameras were rubbish. Trying to process your way out of poor hardware never works :D HTC are probably still using legacy code/recipes from that era. They certainly don't need to do that now!

Wow this phone is so much nicer without the pre-installed screen protector. Those capacitive buttons suddenly respond as you'd expect! Screen just feels nicer to touch and again far more responsive.

Me and my gf popped into carphone warehouse and she got the Xperia S and I got the One X. I like some of the features the xperia has but I do find its a little clunky to use. The buttons on the bottom drive me mad, the camera I am finding hard to compare, both take pretty good photo's under good light. The 3D on the xperia is awesome on my SA950 monitor, it does a really good job at that. The one X does HDR which works really well I find and examining some of the properties the X seems to take faster shots. I got one F/2 @ 1/1667 of a second while the xperia seems to always be at F/2.4 around 1/1400ish.

I found the screen on the one X much better in direct sunlight than the Xperia which seemed very glossy and reflective, I like some of the features on the Xperia but the One X is a lot better to use for me. htc sense is a lot better to navigate around than the sony software, but thats just my opinion.

Faults; atm both phones seem to have a few issues, the xperia s has frozen solid twice now while playing games and required a hard reset. the one X I get the odd advert flicker and once when I opened the camera the screen briefly entirely went stripy green for a split second but seems fine most of the time. hopefully these will be fixed in the software updates?

Hi,

I have just connected the charger to my phone for the first time.
Should I just let it charge until I get the green status LED or leave it for a certain amount of hours?

Also I have not tested the screen or button use yet as I don't have a microsim but if I want to remove the pre-applied screen protector does it leave any adhesive residue or is it a clean 'peel'?

Thanks

I bet screen IQ improved too, removing it almost turned the Arc into a different phone tbh. Good to know the same applies to the S. :)

Getting this phone today, first Android/Smartphone is there anything I should do first?

Should I update firmware and the like?

Also is there a decent/recommended case/cover for it? I fear breaking a phone.. especially considering I cycle a lot as my form of transport..

Since I somehow broke the screen of my Nokia 6700classic by sitting in a car when it was in my back pocket, costing me 70+ quid to fix.. I've been very worried :o.

Make sure yo get 0.73 firmware and as for a (cheap) case that's pretty darn good for £3/4.....

GEL CASE GLOSS BLACK FOR SONY ERICSSON XPERIA S

Search for that - can't remember if we are allowed to link to its supplier.

News - an early CM9/ICS alpha has been released :D - they might beat Sony at this rate lol.

Just have to figure out how to do these things :) Do I get this firmware via PC companion ?

I *think* you can but thought my friend's came via OTA. Which network are you with? You can debrand your phone (guide is a page or two back - Xperia Blog) so you can update to future firmware updates before the network as other regions get them first.

Its Orange but I don't think its branded, I got it from buymobilephones.

I'll look at the blog. Pc Companion says im up to date though, but I suppose firmware is a different matter, don't see the number 0.73 anywhere so I guess I don't have that!

How alien Android is to me!

Go to settings, then about phone at the bottom and then build number at the bottom. It should read something like 6.0.A.3.67/73

Mine reads 6.0.A.3.57

Got a problem.. I think. I can't seem to add my google account. I've put my password and email in correctly, even changed my password via PC to make sure its right and it claims its wrong when I try to add the account to my phone.. Any ideas? :\

Hhhmmm definitely needs updating. I am not sure why your Google account is doing that? You sure it is in correctly? Type in another app and copy across to make sure?

It doesn't expect the google account to have a google email does it? Because mine is my ole ntlworld.com email.

I'm doing the debranding flash now. Where can I find the 0.73 firmware? I've googled it and failed.

Here is your source of ROMs, firmware etc.

You can flash the firmware via a non root/unlock bootloader way or doing through root/unlock bootloader. Some phones bootloaders can't be unlocked at the moment - to find out:

First, you should confirm that it is possible to unlock the boot loader of your phone by checking the service menu. In your phone, open the dialler and enter *#*#7378423#*#* to access the service menu.

In your phone, tap Service info > Configuration > Rooting Status. If Bootloader unlock allowed says Yes, then you can continue with the next step. If it says No, or if the status is missing, your device cannot be unlocked.

Here is a thread with a stock generic 0.73 firmware - this is doing it the non root/unlock bootloader way.

Does anyone have the following bug? When you click messaging it takes you to a previous thread (often not the last viewed) and when you click back it closes messaging and doesn't go back to the view all messages.

Mine has version 6.0.A.3.67

Is the '67' part of the number the firmware?

Cheers
