So happily unboxing my stuff today. Doesn't post.. well i don't think it does as the screen is blank. I'm thinking a DOA CPU [AMD FX-4170]. The mobo has power in all the right places and using the PSU now. Tried both PCI-E and onboard GFX and still nowt! Tried the usual swapping RAM, BIOS battery, etc. Any thoughts?

Mobo: Gigabyte 880GM-USB3
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8Gb DDR3 1600
CPU: AMD FX-4170

I assume the case and CPU fans turn on? Also I assume you've tried the monitor in a different PC. If it still doesn't work, try just using 1 stick of RAM. Also check the pins on the CPU/mobo to see if there are any bent/missing. If you still haven't found anything wrong, and you don't have any compatible CPUs/mobos to swap in, then it's RMA time.

Hi there,

Is that the revision 1.x or 3.1 version of the motherboard (it should say at the bottom left corner next to the PCI ports)?

The earlier rev 1.x boards don't support bulldozer CPUs like the FX-4170, while the rev 3.1 does.

If it is the right board, then would you be able to post a couple of photos of the motherboard and all the connections you have made? just in case you missed something.

Just checked, the mobo is rev 3.1 - well get the photos shortly when camera batteries are charged. Thanks again.

EDIT: Worth mentioning that i'm using a Hiper 630w PSU, but i wouldn't have thought it was the PSU not giving enough juice.

If the kit is from OcUK, you might wanna give the customer services forum a nose. Link the Dons to this thread and they should be able to raise a ticket for you as long as they don't have anything else to suggest.

Doubtful. It's worth A/Bing anyway if you haven't.

As someone already asked, did you buy this from OcUK?

Hiper PSU's aren't the best. My money is on the PSU.

I'd say most likely PSU, then the motherboard with the CPU being very unlikely to be faulty.

Also make sure your monitor is set to the correct input channel, i.e. Digital/Analogue. It might be expecting an analogue signal when you're feeding it digital or vice versa.

You need to try to isolate the issue before you start RMA'ing stuff because if they test it in a test rig and it's OK then they'll just charge you for the return postage and you'll be no better off.

Hey guys, appreciate the replies.

The case doesn't have a speaker, but gonna pick one up from Maplins tomorrow. I'm using the PSU now and not suffering from any problems that I can detect. If it was a power issue, then I'd be amazed that anything worked. As I mentioned before, it sounds like its stuck on a boot loop even with GPU disconnected using on-board DVI out.

Yes, bought this all from OcUK.

Agreed on isolating the issue! I will get those photos up soon!

Yes, looks like the right connections. Though does your 630W PSU not come with an 8pin ATX power connector (usually arranged as a 4+4)? If so, then I would plug this power connection into the ATX 12V socket (next to the CPU) instead of the 4 pin.

Also, if that is an anti-static bag that you are testing it on I would take it off there before you test it again - since those bags are conductive and can short your board. Instead testing in a wooden table, on cardboard or in the case itself (on the stand-offs) would be better options.

Well i did try the 8-pin connector after it didn't work the first few times and still didn't work. The static bag was only used for the photos, it wasn't powered.

EDIT: Just tried the 8-pin again and the PSU makes a strange screeching noise. Doesn't happen with the 4-pin.. so would this indicate a power issue? Also just picked up a speaker pack from maplins, will report back soon!

Quick update. As the board didn't power up again, i sent the mobo back for RMA. They say it all works fine. So getting the charge etc BUT i don't have a solution to my problem. I will try the cpu out in a friends PC. If that all ok, i would assume power? This is getting ridiculous and frustrating. I have a LAN coming up and all i wanted was a simple upgrade.

Ok update time.

Nailed it down to a dead CPU or BIOS flash. Tried the latter and it worked! So.. next up.. SSD & GPU :) Thanks for all your help - here's a lonely old AMD fan waiting for Piledriver in Q3...
