Dehydrating with The_blue - Easy beef Jerky

Oooh beef jerky is a fantastic high protein snack! (Though high salt too - but that can be reduced of course ;)). Good job monsieur le bleu! :)

I've seen the home made wooden ones but would love an electric.

The chopping is one of the reasons i do jerky. (i like my biltong dry!)
 
:D SO happy this thread has been bumped - totally forgot about it.

Made some the first time around. It didnt dry out by the time i went to bed, so left it in the oven (turned off- but still warm). Got back from uni the next day and my brother had eaten most of it - raging:mad:

Next batch is marninading just now. I'll dehydrate it tomorow so that i can stay at home and stand guard over it.
 
Update: Meat is ready to dry.
Paperclips make great meat hooks :D

How well does brisket work for jerky? Is it much tougher? Reason being is i'll make up a batch with a kilo of silverside and it'll be gone within a week, so cheaper = more.
 
Just started a new batch of jerky, marinading as we speak. Trying a sweet teriyaki marinade this time around, hopefully turns out well :)
 
I have just made a batch, its in the cooker now. its been at 60 for about an hour, no signs of it drying yet (but there is a bit of condensation on the oven door and small pools on the foil i put down. This is my first batch, does it sound OK?
 
Ah thats a relief, its been in there a good long while now. Im beginning to think my ovens version of 60 is slightly less than my idea of 60, hmmmmm, ill crank it up 5-10
 
I need to make some more soon, the only problem with making your own jerky is that once it's done it doesn't last long, about 3 days between my girlfriend and I, yum!
 
I love jerky and have just finished a pack of wild west beef jerky off in about 2 minutes

Anyone care to start shipping bags of jerky? Some of the finished products on here look and probably tasty amazing - a lot better than the wild west that i love

Jerky selection pack for £20 or something would be awesome. It would be a sure winner for things like fathers day

Trouble is that it's quite a time intensive thing to make, marinading for 12-48 hours, then drying for 6-9 hours rotating the drying racks every hour. So i can only do it at the weekends and have to be around the whole day, my friends pester me to make them some but it's not always easy to find the time.
 
I really must give this another go, the beef itself turns out fine, but I haven't yet found a marinade that works well. I bought a teriyaki marinade last time and it tasted awful. Might just go with a simple dry rub or something next time.

My local sainsburys does bags of honey bbq stuff which is so tasty, however at £2.99 for an 85g bag It's a bit of an expensive snack. Also found out a south African restaurant near me sells their own biltong at £9.99 for 250g, but i might as well spend that on a good chunk of beef and do my own again.
