Hey

As the title says i'm looking/thinking/scared-of-spending-money to upgrade to the GTX 680 now i game on a Dell 24" at 1920 x 1080 so i'm thinking would the 4GB version be overkill in this situation - would i see any benefit over the 2GB version or is it just going to be money down the drain - i won't be getting multiple monitors anytime soon - i don't have the space :)

Thanks

At 1080p it's highly unlikely you will need more than 2GB of vram, unless you play something like Skyrim with loads of mods, 4GB will be overkill.

Complete and utter total waste imo, a 4gb card would be wasted on anything less than 3 monitors, and you would need 2 of them to power the monitors at a decent framerate, the 2gb 680 is the one for you.
If it was me, i'd wait 2 or 3 weeks to see if the price drops following AMD's cuts.

No point waiting if you did that facebook thing for a 10% discount, coming up this week (wednesday for 10 days or less) ? A palit 4GB Card @ £539.99 will be £485.99 on pre-order (don't know when it's actually coming out) doubt it'll be cheaper than that for a couple of months even with a drop in price.

hell, if i had 3 monitors it would be 15ft wide :D that's three 55'' TVs

yes but you're missing the point, i think, we're talking about in two years time, well i definitely am anyway.

i'm not in the least bit interested in todays games, because as said these look ok with only 2GB

If someone buys a 680 4 GB for 1920x1080, they are most likely ****ing away money. They will not be making use of the extra 2 GB for such a long time that it does not really make sense to pay the premium for 4 GB now.

1440p/1600p monitors could do with them as well although at 1080p I agree.

Probably better off going with 2GB 680 or at least that's what I'd do + 10% discount if you sent in your code and you're looking at a great price for your resolution with every game running perfectly.

There was a promotion that dave_beast has linked you to. If you e-mailed them over the weekend + had liked the page you'd get a 10% discount sent to you for Wednesday this week

Glad they made such a great offer. but...

Wow, that's very annoying, I just bought some stuff from OCUK over the weekend and had no idea about this promotion. Just wasted some money right there.

I'm additionally buying an i5 3570k and GTX 680 in a couple weeks and I won't have the discount code for those either. Gunna waste even more money coz I had no idea this promotion was on even though I'm spending £950 on PC parts.... -_-

Thanks so much for all the banter and opinions people - very helpful indeed - if the voucher does come through and like you say the 4GB version will be £489 - the Gigabyte one i wanted (this) is usually £480, albeit at the moment it is lower as a pre order special but the relative little different makes the 4GB one seem attractive...

Now i'm not one to waste one - in fact i'm extremely tight (i prefer careful) and even upgrading has had me thinking for ages now but i'm getting closer to biting the bullet..

yea i've no plans to game on anything other than a large tv screen, i've never used a monitor in my life cool:

in fact i'm extremely tight.

That's what she said.

Seriously though, pretty much as everyone else has said 2Gb is good enough for 1080p. You've already mentioned that you won't be going multi-monitor but what about any plans on upgrading your monitor to a 27inch/2560 x 1440?

If not then a 2Gb 680 is still the final choice, and a nice upgrade from your 1.5Gb 580. The reference cooler the 680 have are know to be reasonably quiet even at load so I doubt you'll even be able to hear anything from the Gigabyte you've chosen :)

I don't think i'll be getting a new monitor anytime soon (as long as this one doesn't break! *touchwood*) but if i was to get an upgrade to 27inch would the 4GB be the better option - i'm just thinking about future proofing as i don't plan on buying a new GPU after this one for a long time :) ha
