Right,

Looking to book a snowboarding/skiing holiday in europe over new year. Booking it for 3 maybe 4 people.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience with companies and also a bit of advicce on wheres good to go for night life etc.

Cheers,

KaHn

I always book independently so cannot really recommend a company, though I know Inghams are pretty good. Now my suggestions have not taken into consideration at all the ability of the group going, and are purely based on the fact that you are going over new year, so you want to party, right?

You want to be looking at places like Val D'Isere, St Anton, Saas Fee, Ischgl & Sauze d'Oulx.

The Austrians know how to party the best, closely followed by the Swiss.

Yeah, you might be right booking everything independantly as looking at stuff at the moment and it all seems a bit hit and miss with the companies.

I'd say it's beginner level skiing as I am taking my friend and his wife as a wedding gift, but partying is good :).

Cheers for the input.

Thought Ischgl night life was pretty terrible, and I was there at New Years when everything should have been buzzing. Also not a good resort for beginners.

Sauze d'Oulx i completely agree with. Excellent terrain for all levels (all though nothing really that challenging). Nightlife is very good across all the bars in town.

OP,

nearly all UK package ski holidays go through Crystal Ski, Nielson's or Ingham's. They are all pretty much the same, although for some reason I prefer crystal.

Good website that has a huge selection at the cheapest prices for the above vendors is www.igluski.com

This is a few years back now, but all still 100% relevant. Cheap and good nightlife/slopelife (some good live music on the slopes in places such as La Folie Douce).

Val Thorens, specifically hotel Le Cheval Blanc. Cheap, chearful, and on the slopes itself.

Best off using Jet2.com to fly to Chambéry, as this will cut down your transfer time from 4.5hrs (from the two major nearby airports of Lyon or Geneva) down to just under 2hrs. But I guess this all depends on if you have a nearby UK airport that Jet2 do the UK>Chambéry route from. Alternatives would be easyjet or similar to Geneva or Lyon, but they always seem to be more expensive.

As for transfers, you can use altibus, or get a taxi (which isn't as expensive as it sounds). Another alternative is to use taxi to Chambéry train station, then a train to Moutiérs, and then the Bus up to Val Thorens (this worked out as cheap as the direct bus from altibus.com, but was more interesting).

Renting is simple if you stay in Le Cheval Blanc, as they have an intersport shop in the lobby that are as cheap as anywhere else you will find in the resort to rent from, good selection too. You can find them on http://www.intersportrent.com, but I've never been when they have had no stock in to rent, so booking in advance isn't a necessity. You also get your lift pass with the room (if you book them as a package) so it simplifies that a bit).

The reason I've laid it out like this is that generally I seem to save on average £100 a person over booking with a tour operator.

Hope that helps :)

I've booked twice through http://www.igluski.com/ twice now and not had any issues, as mentioned they're just an agent for the operators. Actual holidays were with Balkan Holidays and Neilson.

Best place to go for a world of advice, for me at least, was http://www.goneboarding.co.uk/default.aspx loads of people on there into winter sports. I'm on there already and easy to find.

I would say Andorra is probably a good bet, I went to Arinsal this year but found the slopes a bit limited for anything more than a beginner/intermediate but you get a lift pass that includes Pal and Arcalis (much better slopes and conditions) too.
Did a day trip over to the other ski area too, the grandvailra, there's so much more to ski there. Think you just have to be selective with the resort depending on the type of holiday you're after.

hope my 2 cents helps

Sauze d'Oulx in italy is good, my bro has done 3 winter seasons over there. Crystal is a good company

How about organising another wee aberdeen meet as well?

/shameless thread hijack :p

I'm away to vegas tomorrow mate and maybe flying to brazil after that so wont be around untill middle of may now, will sort it with Adam when I'm back and free, but with the party season coming up it will probably have to be a week day meet.
