680 4GB @1920 x 1080 - Overkill?

yea i think the penny is starting to drop here as well, mind you i expect all future top end cards will be over 2GB anyway, so you'll get no choice :cool:

this 685 or 690 had better be something pretty special, or i'll probably get a 680 instead... especially if it comes out at a silly price !

you'll never ever need more than 2GB VRAM for 1080P, that's why I got a GTX680 over a 3GB 7970

Well that's not strictly true. If 1080p remains a standard for a long time (say - 5 years) then 2GB may not be enough vram for the best settings.

But by then the GPU core and architecture of the card itself will be just as much a limitation as it's available Vram.

So I agree with 2GB being suitable.

Edit: BF3 max settings 64 player caspian border session VRam max usage 1179mb (aero off but no pagefile - all textures on card.)
