Just received a very special i7 920 from Canada

Xtreme-Amped Core i7 920 7.5+ GT/s QPI Bus Speeds @ just 1.25v VTT/QPI
4.5GHz @ JUST 1.382v @ Up To Tj-MAX
4.4GHz @ JUST 1.343v @ Up To Tj-MAX

You have to admit thats one hell of an overclock as its 2.66ghz default and on air. Got a Alpenföhn K2 Mount Doom CPU Cooler and moved one of the fans on the Antec 1200 rear to the front of cooler (its massive thought my old Coolmaster V8 was big)
Was going buy a new setup but i like the what i have got so this seemed a good stop gap, also with two oc 7970 xfire nothing was pushing it anyway.
Just well impressed by this chip (awesome)

Looks like a pretty impressive chip, what were the load temps like under IBT? been thinking of adding a 3rd fan to my k2 as well.
 
4.5 ghz idle about 50 full load 84 max at 4.4ghz drops to idle 42 max 72.
Just stuck the fan on the front because it was in the way at the back and could not be bothered to strip it out, dropped around 2 to 4 degree with it on.

Very nice, sadly my own 920 is hitting 80c @4ghz, got 7c hotter since sticking the rig in a new case.
 
Mine sits at 4.4GHz 24/7 at 1.38v on an Antec Kuhler 620 (worse than a Noctua, by far), and idles around 33c, loading around 70c. I'm pretty certain that on big air it would be the same as in the OP.

Doesn't seem that special to me :confused:

Well you must have a cherry picked 920 then, the best i got my other 920 to was 4ghz, so this one is special its all on the same rig. Dont forget it 215x21 far harder to get stable.

Sounds like it was a pretty decent cpu as well. The antec 1200 has great airflow as well iirc. Ive got to look into getting better airflow into my case, (bitfenix shinobi xl).

Did adding the third fan to the k2 make much difference. I have the front k2 fan sitting spare as i replaced it with a same speed blue bladed alpenfohn wingboost fan.
 
you mean you bought a cherry picked chip without knowin the batch number?:D

go on share with us,i bought mine from the states also,when they first came out
 
Depends entirely on usage, an overclocked i7 920 is still a very powerful cpu for a gaming rig. Something like a 2500k will show better gains in tasks like encoding. Plus theres the additional cost of a new motherboard and ram for the 2500k. The old 9** series cpu's can be had very cheaply now.

Yeah but he has bought 2 of those 920's now from what I gather reading through this thread, presumably he got the 1st one at full price when new and the 2nd one couldn't of been cheap with the shipping from Canada.

Why you think it would be faster i dont think so plus the extra £££££
7970 OC xfire vsync 2560 x1440 60fps everything maxed every game at 4ghz i7 920.

Show me where a 2500k would be any faster than this setup, at any ghz it would not improve the fps with vsync on.

I just wanted to see if the chip i purchased lived up to the sellers hype and it did!. I will sell my old i7 920 to recoup the cost of the cooler, you want to see if a 2500k is quicker an this 2 year old rig name you benchmark.

Plus 4 more cores of course

Name a better upgrade for £280, did not need to but like i said in the latter just took wanted to see, chip was guaranteed or money back. I only purchased one the other is 2 years old.

Ok fair enough show me where to buy a motherboard,cpu, 2000mhz memory, cooler for £280.

You still dont get it, a 1000mhz cpu would be no faster in games with two highend Gpu`s with vsync on at soild 60fps. GPU all the way with any modern CPU.

Plus your comparison is lame a 3.3ghz 2500k against a 2.66ghz i7 920 at stock, find one both at 4.5ghz there is no difference to note.

With V-Sync on lol? Well of course not then, you should only need 1 high end GPU for 60fps. And I got an i5 2500k, Motherboard and cooler for £240 of the MM. Pretty sure you could get 4gb DDR3 for £40 on top of that to meet your £280 budget.

FFS READ A BIT MORE AT 2560X1440 60fps every game maxed vsync on!!!!!!
