Thinking of it, I think "Mom" is a bit of a midlander thing, the only people who say "Mom" are from the Midlands or America.

Mum or Mam are interchangeable, Mother if I'm exasperated or on the wind-up, Mom is nonsense.

Other than being from the south and hence referring to mine as Mum, the rest of this is bang on. Mom is a horrible Americanism that has no place outside US English - not acceptable in UK English.
