Mother. Growing up, my sisters and I weren't allowed to use Mum or Dad when speaking to our parents, my Dad didn't like it. And it's stayed that way, even though my Dad has mellowed a lot!

Never heard mam when I was a kid but guessing thats because it's more a northern thing? Mother seems too formal to me and i'm not American.

My missus calls my mum ma just like she calls her mum ma...really grates on me because it reminds of those american inbred hill billies that call their mothers ma.

Mum or Mam are interchangeable, Mother if I'm exasperated or on the wind-up, Mom is nonsense.
