Ours is a Mountfield but needs replacing. But it has lasted about 10 years. Things to consider:
How wide do you want it (wider means less walking up and down).
Key or pull started.
Do you want a roller for the back so that it gives nice stripes as you walk up and down.
Honda engined models are the ones to go for.
Make sure that the height adjustment is done easily
Large grass box to hold lots of grass
Self-propelled if you have a big garden makes it easier
Something with a Honda or Briggs & Stratton engine, you really want a metal deck too, you need to size the mower depending on how much land you have, having one which drives the wheels is a godsend.
spend a bit of money on a good one. I have a petrol one from B&Q and the likes. Had it about 4-5 years now. It is ok. Always starts first time, even when left over winter in shed. but the metal is quite thin. Started to get some holes here and there so needs sorting or replacing as could be dangerous if it picks up a stone and throws it out of one of the holes.
Bough a decent s/h Briggs and Stratton form my local mower man for £70 self propelled and adjustable, only had to ever fill it up with petrol, oil is still honey coloured and it starts first pull even after a winter laid up, had it 5 years now this year I've got to sharpen the blade.
Some of the B&Q stuff is tosh but pick up a reasonable one on a 20% off weekend and you're laughing
We've got a nice fast sit on one for home though it broke the other day. To much grass to do with a small mower, so guess the problem needs to be fixed.
I've just bought an old but in good condition john deere jx75 for my home garden for £100.
Even though it's old, it would wipe the floor with most £100 odd new mowers.
If your lawns level enough a nice cylinder mower will leave a great finish.
I got a second hand ex council one from ebay it's a beast but does a fantastic job.
