How do you pull your handbrake up?

The button is for releasing it, why wouldn't I want to hear the sound?

This. The button in the majority of cars is purely for releasing the handbrake and the only time it needs to be pushed is on the releasing of the handbrake. I can understand that some people don't like the noise the ratchet system makes but the old tale that you'll 'wear the ratchet out' if you dont press the button to apply the handbrake always gives me a chuckle.

the yank it up with the ratchet engaged is learner/women driver way
so that the tension from the cable cant pull the lever before you release the button

Only found out what the clicks sounded like in my car today after reading this thread :p

Usually hold the button in and pull the handbrake on, out of habit rather than caring what will happen to the ratchet.

Start with a button push in and finish with about 3/4 clicks of the ratchet near the top.

All performed in 0.3 of a second (+/- 0.0124 of a second).
