I recently closed my ISA with Santander. I was speaking to some guy in Glasgow in less than a minute and all my business was done hassle free in less than 5 minutes. I then phoned up Barclays to cancel my other ISA, I was on hold for just over 5 minutes before getting through to some Indian guy who was useless. He got me through the security questions fine but then had trouble understanding I wanted to close my ISA but keep my current account open lol, anyway, he had a problem and had to pass me through to another department.

I was passed over to a rather grumpy sounding English bird who simply said "We can't close ISAs on the phone you have to go into branch", she then hung up and I was presented back to the Indian guy who asked if I had any other problems. I just said no and hung up.

Why are Santander able to close my ISA over the phone but Barclays are unable to?

Anyway I asked Santander to put the remaining ISA funds (all 1p of them) into one of my current accounts. They haven't, they sent my the cheque below, I have a feeling they've done this so I don't cash it, honestly, it will be embarrassing cashing it in but every little helps. Surely it costs more than 1p to send me 1p though? :p

I would be automated

There would be an outcry if they started just 'keeping' money that people had in their accounts, any value over 0 and they have to give it to you! Where else could you draw the line?

as my nanna always said " look after the pennies and the pounds look after themselfs"
i would go into the bank and hand it over the counter

Just cash it you big pansie. 1p is 1p. Just do it.

Where have a I said I'm not going to? I just said it will be embarrassing lol. It will have to wait though as it must surely cost more than 1p in petrol to get to my bank.

I initially though why did they bother, but it's not as if they can just keep it is it.

I also then thought maybe they should phone me up and ask me what I want to do with it but it's probably cheaper to send me a cheque in the post that to phone me up.

Does anyone know why Barclays can't cancel my ISA over the phone though? I really dislike going into bank branches, always a possibility you could get caught up in an armed robbery.

You never said anywhere but 1p is still money.

Ask Barclays, it's their policy? Did you ever see Kevin & Perry Go Large? You might get a reward if you stopped the armed robbers with your penis.

Huh, I tend to find Santander are a right pain in the butt to close their accounts.... Maybe they've improved recently...

Doesn't surprise me that you have to go into a branch though, take some forms of ID with you as well...
