Goodnight sweet F10 M5

I commented a while back about being overtaken by an M3 on the Autobahn that I felt was going too fast for the conditions and everyone jumped down my throat for being a prude.

It just goes to show how easy it is for something to go wrong even if 'you're in control'.

Amazing that anyone survived that to be honest.

When you are doing those speeds it's the closing speed that is the real problem. People look in their mirrors and see a car half a mile back and simply pull out, a few seconds later they look in their mirror and there is a car nose diving trying to scrub off 100mph to get to their speed.

Doubt it. Hitting the back of a car doing 60 MPH when you're doing 150Mph is no different to hitting a stationary car at 90Mph really. It's never going to end well no matter how you look at it.

Exactly this.

There's going quick and there's going stupidly quick when there's other road users.

It's incredible how modern safety systems can let you survive from something like that, it really is.

I have natural speed limiter in my head set at about 130. I feel uncomfortable covering so much ground once at speeds like that for reasons like that.

Amazed they're alive tho

I don't really care about the circumstances but the fact that people got out alive, even if seriously injured, of a 186 mph crash is frankly amazing.

I feel the same at about 100mph! The video below was the first time I've seen such speeds on the Autobahn from a drivers perspective (posted by someone else on this forum a couple of months ago). Really highlights just how much ground you cover in a short space of time - just watching it scares me!

Friend of mine said this yesterday when I showed him. Aren't all BMWs limited to 155mph? Are there any legal consequences of getting around that limiter?

Not in this country there's not iirc, BMW will remove the limiter if asked if you show them your race licence. Most re-maps will have a limiter remove option too.

Most M cars can get round the limiter easily anyway by simply not shifting into top gear. In the E46 M3, 5th wont get you much past the indicated 155 mph, but it will get you past where as in 6th, is kicks in bang on an indicated 155 mph.

The M5 can be bought with the M Drivers Package which raises the limiter to 190.

Poor driving on the M5 drivers part.

should have taken more care when approaching a junction of any kind at that speed.

And if the excuse that he couldnt take evasive action, or negate the threat of someone merging without indicating was the speed he was traveling.

Well, you have your answer right there.

One of the first things you are taught either on your HGV test, or as an advanced driver is observation and defensive driving, he should have been looking for stuff like this happening, purely because of how fast he was going.

And its probably safer to sit in the 3rd lane when doing that sort of speed
