Hi all,

Virgin kindly upgraded my 30mb to 100mb for 50p a month cheaper than what I'm currently paying! Anyway I've got an Ambit 300 modem and a Dlink 615, problem is my pc is wired but can only achieve a maximum download of 11MB/s yet unplug the router and run direct from the modem itll go 12.6MB/s.

Is it just a case of find a cheap reliable good router with a gigabit port or Is there anything I can put in before the router that'll give me two wires, 1 to router and 1 to the pc?

Cheers!

"cheap" and "realiable good" don't really go together.

Get a decent router. If you enjoy the internet then a relatively expensive (£70-£100) router will be a small investment compared to the time you use it.

100mb is quite a lot, especially if you have lots of hosts connecting, so invest.

Would a Belkin F5D8235uk4 be sufficient? It used to have a high price tag, although obviously a little old now and cheaper or is it still a case of higher price now/newer technology?

why havent you got a superhub? get on the Virgin and ask for one. You say you are wired so you shouldn't have any problems with one - all of the problems are wireless-related. you can then keep the dlink for wireless duties, if you want. No need to spend additional money on yet another router :)

Mini ITX + pfSense/smoothwall would give decent throughput and be cheap. But what you save in money you invest in time and effort building and setting up.

Either way you'll get out what you put in :)

If I did get a superhub and put it in modem mode would that not stop me using it direct to my computer as well as direct to the router, as it would be acting as a modem just like I've got?

If it's in modem only mode then it's just that, only one switch port will work which you would connect to your router. You would then have to connect the router to your PC using whatever means you choose.

Connected via gigabit to the router with the superhub in modem mode I get ~12.5MB where as upstairs is connected via 100mb connection to the router and get ~11.5MB maximum.

Id commit to a Gigabit router.

You don't need anything since your already getting 100Mb/s download speeds (your giving results in Bytes and not bits)
12.6MB/s comes out as 100.8Mb/s

I can only assume your router only has a 100mb Ethernet switch inbuilt which will limit your 100mb WAN connection as the advertised WAN speed is AFTER overheads.

you do not need to put it in modem mode. Just connect the dlink to the superhub and turn it's DHCP server off, also know as access point (AP) mode. This effectively makes it a switch and hands over the DHCP duties to the supperhub. Then just Connect the pc directly to the superhub and job done. This is exactly how I run my own superhub and Linksys wrt54g without issues.

The thing is with this asus router is that i hope its reliability will be better than my past 2 routers a xyzel and a d link dgl 4300.

The xyzel likes to give a ping of about 300 as far as i remember and the dgl 4300 well that does not seem to not work.

Unless i have to fork out for a enterprise router which are expensive :/.

I wish router manufacturers would use the ruggedness of enterprise routers in their routers and i would not care if it costs like £200 at the most and last 5 years or more.

The ASUS RT-N56U is extremely reliable.

Uptime: 25 days 22 hours 39 minutes 1 seconds (since we suffered a powercut). I'm sure others will have more impressive uptime. :p

I know the OP says he wants max speed but honestly for the tiny improvement involved I'd keep my money in my pocket the difference is going to be hardly noticeable on what is in reality a very fast connection already.

I should hope so, my superhub had no downtime for 5 months. It'd still be going but i had a powercut too lol
