My Asus P7P55D-E is an LGA1556 socket motherboard so I'm limited to upgrading. I don't want to change my motherboard so I'm looking at option for a CPU upgrade.

I have a GTX680 and have a feeling my i5 750 @ 3.7Ghz is holding it back. Would upgrading to an i7 870 make much of a differnce, is it worth it? My PC is mainly used for gaming "BF3, Alan Wake, Crysis 2 etc..). I game at 1080P if that helps.

If you knew in advance that the CPU you was getting was a good clocker then yes it would be worth it but if you walking in blind I wouldn't bother.

If it was cheap I would personally go for it.

It's the last upgrade you could make to your system before replacing motherboard.

If it was going to cost a lot, then probably wouldn't bother

Those chips weren't as locked down as SB chips though, but they did have an unlocked multiplier while good 1156 motherboards didn't have a single clock gen so bus clocking actually worked

erm.... what does all that mean? It's been a while since I've been looking for a CPU :(

On Sandybridge CPUs [generation after your 750] you can't overclock the BLK/clock as its tied to the integrated graphics and all sorts so can cause problems. All you do is basically up the mutliplier instead [with some having a locked multiplier so you can overclock at all]. On your CPU you can change both :)

Not worth it unless you can sell your 750 and get an i7 8XX very cheap. Even then the gain in gaming will be small. The 750 is still a good chip and will be for a while imo
