Downgraded from 580Good to 550ti DirectCU

So i've just downgraded from a Gainward GTX 580 "Good Edition" as it was stupidly hot and loud. I'm now using an ASUS GTX550Ti DirectCU , It's still playing my games like i want it to and it maxes at 50c in my otherwise watercooled system.

I have room for another of them, shall i spend another £89 and get a second one?

If you have a water-cooled system why didn't you just get a waterblock for the 580?

Ah right. Well if one 550 is playing fine, then just leave it. Not only will it save cash it will also make sure the temps don't increase. Plus it will prevent any SLI driver fiddling.

Just noticed my games on ultra like Project Cars and Saints Row and BF3 on ultra a little choppy, and the sli would fix that no?

550 ti is a weak card compared the the 580, BF3 on ultra is beyond it. SLI will not help massively because of VRAM. (I take it the dcii is the 1gb version?)

Agree about the 'GOOD' 580 though. I had 2 in SLI and sent them back under DSR. Running heaven with those sounded like a chinook and the top card reached almost 100c before I stopped it.

Yeah it's a 1GB version. The rest of the system is lovely so that will help too, Top end DDR3 8GB RAM, i7 2600K OC'ed to 4.5GHz, Military Grade Motherboaard.

So my old 580 was only 1.5GB VRAM GDDR5 though. :/ but two of these would be 2GB GDDR5.

SLI doesn't stack vram, each card has an exact copy of the same textures loaded to the vram.

say for example you added a 2gb evga 550ti, you'd effectively lose 1gb of it's memory because the contents of the memory is cloned across both cards.

I work for a games studio and use UDK a lot and the noise is deafening from that 580 i dont want to go back to, this one is fine for my work but my games may suffer.

Ok so, the "not running bf3" was just a speculation. It actually runs it at ultra absolutely fine @ 1080p :O

Lol, tbh if the difference between the cards price makes a difference to your finances you need to ask for a pay rise! I take it you're not the boss?

Not a chance that card can run bf3 on ultra. Unless 5fps is classed as fine.

Ok well, it just ran an hour worth of BF3 at ultra.

Also i do enviromental art. I can put pc's together but am not that clever so don't hate me

what a load of tosh.

of course it will run it on ultra @1080p, it might not be at an acceptable frame rate for most of us but it will run the game.

Anandtech list the 550ti as running BF3 on ultra @1920*1200 with 31.4 fps

Getting 32fps on ultra maxed

38 with AA on 4x and Aniso on 4x

42 with shadow on med and SSAO

But yeah ultimately it's a holding card.

I want something quiet than will destroy anything i throw at it.
